Tri-filter color images from B&W negatives

Wow, that water is looking soooo weird. Well, now I have something to look forward when I can get my tricolor camera working. I got my hands on a National Photocolor in really bad condition so still some work to go. Have already film and the holders and replacement filters are ordered. Next stop is getting the shutter working.

One problem I have to deal with is keeping the large format camera steady between exposures. I always tend to bump it a hair between pulling the film holders in and out. It's not a big issue since I'm printing from digital negatives. It's easy to align everything in software.

Absolutely. That's really the greatest challenge and I agree that software comes to the rescue. I've thought about constructing alternative shooting solutions for 4x5. I'd like to shoot exposures with a delay as low as 1 second. I've used a Graphmatic back and it's quick but it tends to be jarring too. And there's more to this than just positioning a new film, the filters have to be changed between shots; the shutter typically needs to be set as well. I'm pretty happy with the sliding filter holder I constructed. Not that it's particularly rugged. The ideal solution might be a sliding or falling back. I have a falling back tri-color camera but it's an historically important antique that took one long glass plate. I wouldn't try adapting it to film.

Color separations for tri-color photography are made on B&W film but an interesting image can be made by shooting on color film if there is a time delay between exposures. By using color film for the three exposures subjects that are motionless will be in monochrome and subjects that move will be in color. There is also the option to create the more typical effect where motionless subjects are in full color but movement appears as a separated color. Here are two images that were made from the same set of color negatives but were treated differently in Photoshop.

Really cool stuff. I am gonna try this once I have time. Mostly still shots, very still. But also for 4x5 astrophotography which is my main focus for this technique.
