Re: Lightmetering night city scape (no spot)

Several years ago when I was learning how to use my large-format camera, I took it with me to San Francisco on a business trip. I wanted to photograph Union Square at night, so in the daytime I walked around the area with my spot meter and gray card, and kept pinging buildings with the spot meter until I found one that reflected 18% gray like the gray card. Later after the sun went down I used that building as a target for the spot meter to set my exposure. It seemed to work alright. I was shooting Fuji Provia, a color film that has no reciprocity failure.

I understand that OP doesn't have a spot meter, but I thought this technique was worth mentioning anyway. If I had it to do over, I would have taken the photo earlier in the day, when there was still light in the sky.
