You have to pay a $35 ($25 for students) submission fee and go to the trouble of writing up an application, for a remote chance at roughly $1000 worth of film plus some modest publicity. Not obvious how attractive a lottery that is.

    True

    I guess nothing is free

I was wondering how Kodak could afford a give away...

Like any competition, if you write a good application along with the photos you submit, you have a better shot. And the entry fee is on a par with most.

Somehow I tend to think that I have a better chance at Denali lottery.

Like any creative competition, the odds are high but talent and the ability to write a proposal are key. Many will most likely not agree with the choice of winners, but that's not goal--

I have come to the conclusion that most photo contests are scams. When you calculate the likely income from entry fees and compare it to the prizes awarded, it is clear who the winner is. What do you think the cost is to Kodak of 200 rolls of film?

Recipients are selected by a review panel on the basis of artistic excellence, accomplishment to date,
and the promise of future achievement.

IOW, senior citizens need not apply. Guggenheim's grant program does the same.
