Thats the Weston Switch. You push that and green peppers never look the same again.
My guess is that it's a catch for some esoteric accessory that slides into the film holder space.
Of all of these answers, I have to say that I would prefer it to be a Weston Switch! Can it be converted to an Eliot Porter switch? I'd like that.
From a design point of view, it's an odd thing. It's not just something you can press against to rotate the back. It's actually a spring-mounted lever. But it doesn't actuate anything as far as I can see, and it seems to encourage turning the back only in one direction (counter-clockwise).

Sorry, I got the Elliot Porter switch on mine. Those were discontinued after 1990.
Better hope yours isn't the "scenic turnout ahead" switch.
