I just purchased an older aluminum Gitzo Series 5 tripod and a Gitzo 1370 low-profile pan tilt head. Both have male attachment screws. Can I use these together? Or this is another Online Auction mistake?

Have you tried to remove the mating bolt from the head? It appears as though it is removable.

The screw sticking out of the head looks a lot like a 1/4 20 to 3/8 16 adapter. I agree with Rick's suggestion: you should be able to get the screw/post out of the head leaving a 3/8 16 threaded hole for it to attach to the tripod.
