    Re: Alignment

I do not know if my method is correct, but this is what I did. Working from the ground-up. First I built the enlarging bench as level and stable as possible, then made a platform on top of the enlarger baseboard that held a 16x20 inch easel. That baseboard platform for the easel was leveled by three adjustable leveling legs. I can elaborate if requested. It is pretty cool.

From there I adjusted the lens platform, next the negative stage. The light source by the illumination.

Maybe others can correct my procedure.

I bought one twenty years ago. It’s the best alignment tool available. Expensive but so worth it.

I wonder if there are any businesses that rent them out for a few days?

I would make some simple tests of sharpness variation in a few test prints before going nuts over precision alignment. Also attempt to evaluate the existing alignment mechanically using rulers straight edges and gauges. Working with slightly smaller lens apertures will increase the depth of field at the negative and make slight misalignment less of a problem.

And very possibly use an aperture outside the optimal range of the lens!

But it is a way to save time and money to get the best results.
