Silver International Conference and Competition March 3-5, 2006

    ****************************************************************

Ilford Photo and Calumet Photographic are jointly sponsoring Silver,
an international forum for devotees of traditional black-and-white
photography, including a conference, a photo competition and a
commemorative book, along with informal discussion gatherings and
    related events.

The Silver conference will provide an opportunity for dedicated
black-and-white photographers and printmakers to listen, learn and
be part of an important photographic community event. It will be
hosted by the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, and will
take place March 3-5, 2006. Additional supporters include the
Society for Photographic Education, Santa Fe Workshops, Texas
Photographic Society and View Camera magazine.

This event will be geared towards photographers and laboratories with
a passion for traditional monochrome photography, and will provide
the opportunity for delegates to hear a lineup of world-class
photographers and lecturers share their expertise and their
experiences to inform, amuse and educate.

The featured conference speakers confirmed to date include Keith
Carter, George DeWolfe, Jeff Dunas, Les McLean, Alan Ross, John
Sexton, and Mary Virginia Swanson all recognized masters in the
field of black-and-white photography with more speakers to be
    announced.

The number of attendees will be limited to 350 in order to ensure
that everyone who attends will be able to benefit from all of the
    presentations and gatherings.

The Silver Photo Competition will award a first prize of $3,000 plus
a Santa Fe Workshop session. Second and third place prizes will be
$2000 and $1000 respectively, and 15 honorable mentions will also be
    awarded.

I think this is a very timely conference and I encourage people to participate. I will go if I can fit it into my schedule.
    Thanks,

I was excited about this when you first mentioned it, but $300?
That I don't get, nor would be inclined to pay.
I would assume that to enter the competition you have to register?
Not much info on the url page you posted for the competition.
Anyone find guidlines for this? I didn't look elsewhere on the Calumet site.

USD 300.00 to attend? That's what it looked like when I read what's posted on the Calumet link. Hopefully it's just an interpretation error on my part.

Maybe there are 350 people out there that will give 'em their $105k. If I had $300.00, I think it would be better for me, and for the industry, if I spent it on film. Maybe that's just me though.

I too cannot locate much information on the contest, I can't attend the conference but would be interested in knowing more about the contest. I did check out the Ilford site and did not see anything but perhaps I missed it.

Maybe the $105,000 goes to replenishing the individual funds of the stock buyout for Ilford's new employees.

This amount is anti-proliferation of film photography, IMHO.

I'm an hour away from Pasadena and would relish being there, but that's just plain gouging.
    For $50.00 I'm there...

I'm curious as to what will be occurring. So far, all that's mentioned is all that's mentioned is a short (but quite interesting) list of speakers, papers to be submitted/read, and a competition/publication. For that and supporting the art and its community, $100 a day is probably a fair price.

If it expands to portfolio reviews, gallery presentations, connections with publishers/gallery owners, demonstrations, mini-workshops, or whatever features are appropriate to what they're trying to do, it could be a grand bargain...

I would also like to mention that APUG (apug.org) is also having their first international Conference May 4-7, 2006 in Toronto. Although not strictly b&w, there should be a great mix of disciplines. There will be workshops and demostrations. Many of us will also be shooting. Please visit APUG for further details.
