    Symmar 240 5.6 (convertible)

Excuse me for double checking and asking what can be find in many tables on LF sites, but I just have to be sure: will Schneider-Kreuznach Symmar (convertible) 240mm (+420mm) f=1:5.6 cover 8x10? It should, but I have been told from one slightly more experienced user that it "won't cover (good)"... (and that it would be much better if I buy his 300mm Symmar!). Is that a catch (his trial to sell me a bigger lens) or is that true?Tnx, Janko.

    Symmar 240 5.6 (convertible)

Schneider gives an image circle of 336mm at f:16 for this lens. 8x10" needs 310mm. With Schneider's notoriously narrow stated image circles, I'd say it covers with plenty of movements for landscape photography.

    At least mine does

    Symmar 240 5.6 (convertible)

    Hi Janko

It will cover but not by much so better would be Symmar S or APO Symmar wich have about 1 cm more covering power. Or of course the 300mm would be even better.
    Good luck!

    Symmar 240 5.6 (convertible)

Jeol Sternfeld's standard lens is a 240mm Symmar S (in the specs only 1mm mor of coverage, not 1cm? and that's at f22 not f16) - he seems to do pretty well with it.

    Janko,

You probably would be better off with the 300 mm lens. Specs for "normal" lenses
in the 240 to 305 mm range are given below. It's likely that this will be one
of your more frequently used lenses, so I'd suggest that you find one which will
    allow considerable movement.
