    Film Holder Repair

    Hello All,

I have a vintage film holder in which the hinges have pretty much dried out and rotted away. What material would I use to fabricate new hinges?

    Thanks, Steve

Or book-binding tape. It doesn't matter really, but thin and permanently sticky are the requirements. That eliminates gaffers' tape, duct tape and others that degrade over time.

Book binding tape does work well, but you have to get all the original materials off. I scrape with the end of a chisel, since usually the glue was hide glue, and brittle. Then wiping the surface with acetone to get off any oils, etc, will make it more likely that the tape will stick well.

Cut a piece to length, start on one side, wrap around the bottom and up the other side, press into the rebate, and then very carefully cut of the extra tape, just the tape, not the wood underneath, with a razor blade into the angle of the rebate will make the neatest job.

I am not saying book tape is better than hockey tape--haven't seen the latter, don't know.
Thanks, but I'd rather just watch:

I've used gaffer's tape because that was all I had. It worked and that's been at least 5 years. I'd prefer bookbinders tape though.
I steal time at 1/125th of a second, so I don't consider my photography to be Fine Art as much as it is petty larceny.

Granted you don't use much, but when I went to a fancy art store to buy some, a not big roll of it was something like $25 bucks!!! (But it may have been some fancy stuff as it was quite thick, with excessive texture...) I don't remember now, but I found a narrow fabric on a roll at the fabric store for cheap that worked well (it might have been a bias tape)... It was like a black ribbon...

If you need just a little, ask your local library if they can spare you some...

You can basically use whatever tape you have at hand. If it deteriorates you can replace it, over and over again. It's not that the hinge gets moved 10x per day - when you see it's getting old you just replace it whit whatever you have at hand. No perfection is necessary for that frequency of use.
