The bridges of Europe are always fascinating.
    For example...

Another French town with a bridge.
This is a"bastide" city, the perimeter walls formed a sort of "fortress" in medieval times.

You are looking from outside the walls.
The bridge terminates at a defensible portal in the city walls.
As usual, years pass, raiding parties are subdued, and the economy improves.
Now the wealthy prefer to perch their houses outside where there's more room and a nicer view...

A glimpse of one of the world's most iconic bridges, the magnificent double cantilevered Firth of Forth bridge in Scotland. This view was from the North ferry landing at North Queensferry.

The Firth of Forth Bridge is a cantilever railway bridge across the Firth of Forth at Edinburgh. It's considered an iconic structure, a symbol of Scotland, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The 1890 bridge pioneered construction with steel; (its French contemporary, the Eiffel Tower, was built of wrought iron). Large amounts of steel became available after the invention of the Bessemer process, patented in 1856.
