Anyone familiar with the Sylvania 70w metalarc bulbs?

I have one, and it looks like a projector bulb. M98 R MP70/U/MED. It has a standard 110v-light bulb-type base, but I am reluctant to screw it in as it might need a different voltage. I suspect it is used, but it looks OK, as best I can tell. I don't want to simply trash it if it is OK and someone can use it.

    Any ideas?

I work in the Electrical supply business - That is a metal halide bulb which requires a ballast(transformer) to operate. These were typically used in outdoor floodlights and in some cases indoor commercial lighting applications. They are still in limited use - but quickly being replaced by LED technology. Whatever you do, DO NOT screw it into a regular 110v lamp socket.

That's great to know. Thank you. I'm glad I didn't try to test it. I have a voltage regulator. Can I test it with that -- staring at ZERO? I just want to know if it works. If it doesn't, I'll trash it. If it does, I'll get it in the hands of someone who can use it.

    Please advise.

    Thanks.

You need a ballast for this like in the link below ... a voltage regulator won't do it ...
