The magnesium versions are lighter but also more flexible

The older non M 1570 is better for a heavy monorail

The problem with the 1570 for monorails is the cork bed which is too spongy. It's fine for a flatbed camera where there's a much larger surface area in contact with the head.

What kind of head are you using for your monorail? If you own a ball head do you have any issues with tilting the camera?
I use the the 75mm leveling ball of my tripod with Arca clamp, or the 60mm Burzynski ball head with arca clamp on a 4.4kg Bosch surveyer tripod, or if I think I will need more than 30 degrees, the Arca-swiss Z1-dp on a Manfrotto 055. I have tested the Sinar pan-tilt, an heavy studio pan tilt, the 1570 from Gitzo and a 3-way manfrotto. Except for the Sinar, the arms was always most irritating thing. I sold the Sinar with a P 4x5 as I could not fix a clamp on it. When setting up the camera, first thing is to level it before adding any tilt. And during leveling and the tilt, the friction must be adjusted. I stopped using my Linhof ST-E 8x10" outside studio, and either use a modified Bender 4.5kg, or the even lighter Wehman.
I find it essential to balance the camera on the head, and have Arca rail on all my large format cameras . As this is integrated in the Toyo, I would skip it.

Big Wehman, Toyo 5x7" and a small Chamonix

The matching Linhof Heavy Duty Tripod with OE 90 degree Tilt head mounting a Huge Linhof 5X7/8X10 Kardan Color.

Sitting on the insane Linhof Dolly.

    Nothing is heavier!

Except the Linhof Gigant grasping the same camera.

For the umpteenth time, let me categorically state that I use only the absolutely unequivocally best kind of tripod head - none at all ! The monorail, or any other view camera, is bolted directly to the platform atop the tripod; and I do mean a substantial platform.

I use a Lisand 7jr video tripod with a Baco tilt head. The ball on the tripod let’s you level as desired, and the tilt head allows tilting downward. Both tend to be extremely inexpensive with a little hunting.

I have the same set up - Linhof 8x10 Color Karden Triplex on a 90 degree head affixed to a Linhof Heavy Duty tripod. And yes it is a beast. I do not have the 5x7 or the rollers. I have to pick that beast up to move it. Argggggh.

Re: What kind of head are you using with your monorail camera?

Finding the Linhof Dolly in Michigan got me from my wheelchair to my Van to drive and fetch it without ever getting out of the van. The seller loaded it. I did that for a more than a few Large Format chunks. I have the column extension too.

Now I lost 50 lbs, out of the wheelchair, can walk a few miles and load things.

I am grateful I regained my health. PTL

I have wrote before, that taking up LF, at the same time joining this forum, saved my life. Most friends thought I was a dead man, as they told me later...
