    Epson 850 for 5 x 4

    Question
I live in Malaysia, I asked the Epson rep if he can get me a Epson 850 scanner but he told me they only have the 800 in Malaysia...........I can easily get it from B&H and have it shipped.............should I do that or just take the 800.
I want it for scanning 4 x 5 Negs and printing up to A2

    Thanks

    Neil

Sh!t Sh!t Sh!t. B&H Just said that they cannot ship the 850 to me in Malaysia due to something to do with Epson. So I guess I am stuck with the 800.......how is it??

Physically the same scanner, the 850 ships with a higher end version of the software and i think a second set of holders.

The 800's software is fine (Silverfast Ai), a second set of holders you can get separately if you really want.

As good as it gets without getting into the esoteric territory

Best option for a flatbed for the price, but definitely not the last word, esp. for medium and small format film.

Contact Robin Wong... works for Olympus in Maylaysia. Does reviews and has a very active Blog in Maylaysia. I read all his Olympus Reviews.

Sounds like a guy you need to talk with. Incredibly informative.

Close, but not the same. The V850 includes a more reflective mirror and anti-reflection coatings on its optics that aren't part of the V800.

Yes.. specially for 35mm film a good dedicated roll film scanner will allways be better than flatbeds.

I find that for 120 a dedicated roll film scanner is not as necessary that for 35mm, and a 120 dedicated scanner may cost 5 times what a 35mm can cost.

So IMHO owning a dedicated 35mm roll film scanner (4000 true dpi, in USAF 1951 terms) and a cheap EPSON flatbed is a very competitive choice.
