I can't speak for others but I've been using VueScan for perhaps 15 years on a dozen or so different scanners in that time and prefer it to everything else I have tried. I currently use VueScan on a Windows workstation and a MacBook Air (the same license is good for both platforms) with an Epson V700 and a Canon FS4000. I could even scan on both scanners from either computer at the same time, if I wanted.
There have been around 20 software updates to VueScan in the past year, they download and install within a minute or so. I've never noticed any difference after updating, they may just be adding support for more scanners (there is support for more than 3000 different scanners) but it does let me know that it is a work in progress and not abandon-ware.
I've used VueScan for several years - I like it and it's definitely current.
