    From the Chicagoland area

    Hey folks,

I am happy to have finally joined the club! I recently received my first 4x5 camera. Yay!

I am a graphic designer at a publishing company. At a design conference last year I witnessed someone making wet plates and I was intrigued. I love computers and gadgets, but there is a special place in my heart for old school things. I love getting my hands dirty, so screen printing, letterpress and calligraphy are now hobbies. I decided that this year my goal would be learning photography and at a local camera club I met a guy who shoots a lot of film. He mentioned wet plate and my eyes lit up. He invited me over and I almost hugged him! Using his 4x5's and 8x10's cameras was awesome and I decided that I needed to buy one. I think that learning how to shoot with my 4x5 will strengthen my skills. I've always shied away from photography because I felt like I didn't have the eye for composition and light. I'm excited to try to overcome this mindset and have some fun with photography.

It's great that I have someone local who's willing to help me, and I'm really excited to learn from the experience and expertise of this community as well.

Where are you located? We have a LF group in Downtown Chicago and meet once a month.

Welcome to the forum, Twosmooth. I'm your neighbor, well, just 5 hours away. One of my step-sons lives in Chicago. Great town!

Hey folks! Thanks for welcoming me. I'm in Elgin, so I'm about an hour out of the city. Wife and I just had out third child, so I have less time for my hobbies. I hope I'm available the next time you meet. I will bring my camera...maybe I'll have used it by then! Is the group ok with lots of questions. I just started down the photography road this year and the LF bug bite me pretty early so I barely know anything.

    Thanks again.

First we drink coffee. Then we play show and tell. We BS. Then we walk around and shoot.

Then we go home. Ask your questions before we go home.

Some of us email and meet one on one.

So far nobody died. Which for me is wonderful. Too many family disappearing lately...

I forgot, our little band is mostly city folk. Elgin is actually in Idaho. I don't own a car, don't need one. I dislike getting inside them. Former job phobia, as I tested cars for a career. I can destroy a car very quickly while telling you about the poor handling. Motorbikes are not cages. Get off any time you want. And I do.

    See you next time.
