Epson V800 Arrived. Can't save in tiff.

    Greeting,

Epson V800 arrived. Scanned in a 5 x 7 negative. No newton rings. Tried to save at 4800 ppi in a tiff. I got a sign that I need to save in another format but it doesn't tell which one.

Anyone familiar with this? I can scan at 3200 ppi and save as a tiff.

    Thanks

    Smorton

EpsonScan on my 4870 is so old, it may have changed quite a bit. I have a button beside the "Scan" button that takes me to a page which enables me to specify the output format. TIFF is definitely included.

Are you getting any sort of message about file size being too large?

I'm guessing you are running into a 30,000 pixel limit for your system.

Apparently, TIFF uses 32-bit offsets, and so is limited to 4GB file size. At 4800 DPI, there are ~800M pixels in a 5x7 scan. So 16-bit grayscale requires a file of 1.6GB. But if you're scanning in 48-bit color, 4.8GB is too big for TIFF.

I'd hate to try editing anything that big. Ugh.

Edit: I have the V850, and I don't notice much difference in scan quality above 2400 DPI. You might reserve 4800 for crops, or smaller formats.

Thanks for response. Epson states in user manual that you can't save a jpeg, tiff, etc when scanning on the film bed portion at 4800 ppi.

3200 ppi gives a big file and plenty of detail.

Question: Folks using the Epson flatbeds of the V800 era, or approx. that era like: 1. Epson software, 2. Silverfast, 3. Vuescan?

    Thanks

You might find this article interesting, particular the section entitled "Why I Prefer Epson Scan Software over VueScan": Scanning Tips (with Epson and VueScan Software)

There is extensive discussion of scanning software in existing threads. Please start with a search, and if you have specific questions after that please ask within an appropriate existing thread or launch a new thread on that topic rather than redirecting this thread.
