Forgot to take my label off of a film holder so I ended up shooting two non-existent frames thinking it was loaded. But I did end up liking one of the prior shots:

Thanks Brian. I recently bought a cheap fresnel light and I'm having a lot of fun with that. People talk a lot about how to achieve that distinctive "hollywood" look, and after buying this I'm convinced that the single most important element is that hard light and the corresponding hard shadows pumped out by the fresnel.

It doesn't hurt to have a pretty girl in front of the camera either. Nice job.

I am perplexed...it looks like the head and shoulders (and umbrella) is in good focus, as well as the very distant trees and structures. I mean, it looks like that section of the image is sharp and everything else is out of focus. What lens / camera movements provide that kind of focus?

I combination of tilts like this:



and a litte post processing in PhotoshopCC.

Its a Tominon 135mm lens, so at the distance I was from my subject matter, the tilts were rather limited do to the front and rear standard being so close to each other. So I exaggerated the focus to achieve the look I wanted. Had I gotten the other two images, I dont think any post work would have been needed as I was MUCH closer to my subject which allowed for the extreme tilts. Hopefully I will have my doppelanastigmat unofokal 165mm mounted to a lens board soon which should take care of the front and rear standard distance issues for further shots.

Edit: also forgot to mention that the rear element/s (?) of the lens were removed. The previous owner did this and I am assuming it was to allow the image circle to be larger to allow for some movements. Whether this is true, I am not sure. Just a guess

It slightly bothers me how her hand is in front of the building or street light in the distance.

I made 6 8x10s last weekend; the first real portraits I have done in the format, and it was super fun. I used the Dallmeyer 3b, which you can see doesn't quite cover the format. Here is Sofia in a scan of a contact proof:


This one is disturbing because focus is on the rear eye. Oh well, live and learn...

In this very unusual case, I think that works. The closer eye is covered with hair. Kinda cool actually.

I agree, but would have liked the hair to cover perhaps a centimeter more of her left eye. However, getting everything perfect in LF portraiture is difficult. It is beautiful.
