Archival inks from Canon or HP?

I am looking for a wide format printer and there are two in my price range. They are the HP Deskjet 9650 and the Canon I 9900. When I here about archival inks it seems that everyone is talking about Epson. Do HP or Canon make archival inks? If not are there 3rd party inks made for either of these printers? The HP would be ideal because it is only $350 CDN. The Canon is double that price.

I think you are in the wrong place. This is large format _cameras_, not printers. I doubt you will get much joy here.

Then I guess we better delete all of the threads on the Epson scanners and printers.

Archival inks from Canon or HP?

Steve: Edward is a reguler here and a large format shooter!!
Edward: I have the Canon i9900 and it is a great printer. There are archival inks in the development pipeline and actually Canon could say something about this at PMA..Evan Clarke

Thanks for the heads up Evan. I think I will start saving for that one. I can't wait to be able to print my own pics.

    Edward:

As Evan said, Canon has had a new archival ink on their Japanese internal web site for a few weeks now, so PMA may see an announcement.

HP does have Archival inks, but for their higher end DesignJet 30 and 130 printers. If you want archival glossy, these are spectacular... if your tastes run toward matte or fine-art papers, then you should look to Epson's new R1800.

Glenn, that is a little expensive. I was at Epson's site and the 1280 is reasonably priced but I don't know how bad they will hit me for exchange + shipping + duty + taxes. Sometimes it sucks being in Canada.

PS I am a semi matte kinda guy.

The HP Designjet 130 printing on HP's Premium Plus Smooth Satin makes one incredible print, and blows away the identical prints off my 7600. Smooth Satin looks identical to Fuji Crystal Archive matte. I still don't think glossy is totally up to snuff, and b/w is not much better than 7600 without a rip, but for satin color prints I don't think I've seen better. I haven't tested yet, but the verdict is that it doesnt handle fine art papers well.

I bought it strictly for color prints using only Photo Satin, and for that purpose alone this printer is well worth it.

    Edward,

Apologies if my reply was a bit over the top. Rereading it, it does not read as I intended it to.
