Catching up on photos I made in Yellowstone in 2015. I was there on business and drove through Yellowstone the last day it was open that year, when it was cold, rainy, and frozen. A couple of days after that (after conducting a workshop in Idaho Falls), we drove on to Boise, and stopped at Craters of the Moon. We had to wait an hour at the visitor center for it to stop snowing before they would let us in, but what a neat place in the snow.

These were all made with a Pentax 67, Ektar 100 scanned in a Nikon 9000ED, and edited in Photoshop. (Yes, I finally succumbed to the subscription model--and what a relief after trying the alternatives.) These are making really spectacular 16x20 prints.

Early Snow at Craters of the Moon NM, 2015. P67, SMC Pentax 45mm lens.

Snow on Fall Colors, Craters of the Moon NM, 2015. P67, not sure which lens--thought it was the 45 but the look isn't right. Maybe the 105. I should take better notes.

Isa Lake Mostly Frozen, Yellowstone 2015. P67, 45, and a looooong shutter speed. The sky was heavy and dark.

Smoke Mountain, Yellowstone, 2015. P67, SMC Pentax 200.

Thanks for posting Rick. As it happens I'm flying to Idaho for a week and a half at the end of this week. Hoping I can visit Craters of the Moon. I'm staying in Boise, and the trip is primarily for visiting family...but will be getting out to hike as much as possible. Very cool looking place.

Most of the pics you see are under a brilliant blue sky. I feel lucky to have been there on a snowy day. (I was there again a couple of years later, and it was all much more typical).

Also along the high road from Idaho Falls to Boise is ERB-1, the very first experimental nuclear reactor that generated power. Take the touróitís worth it. Itís utterly isolated, as would be expected. Itís further from Boise, but youíll be driving halfway across the state anyway.
