Just made an 8x10 back. Now I need spring shackles and glass

I just finished (except for varnish) an 8x10 back today. I bought the mahogany last Saturday, so it took a week of fiddling around after work. Probably a total of 5 or 6 hours. Anyway, I have some Deardorff springs, but no shackles. Anyone know where I can get those? Deardorff has them for $38 plus shipping, but after one email I have not been able to get them to respond again.

I also need to make a ground glass, and I wonder if anyone has some of the appropriate grit they can mail me for cost? (I'm in Bangkok.) Also, glass or acrylic? I google it, but opinions are welcome.

Once I get the back working I will mount it on my studio camera, but the long term project is to build the rest of an 8x10 folding field camera. I am modelling it off a 4x5 Ikeda Anba, so everything has to be called up.

I don't know if it helps but I didn't use shackles on my 8x10. Stainless steel nails instead. Pre-drilled holes, then tapped into place. They have not bent yetCheck the link in my signature.

Thanks Vinny. It looks like a good solution, but unfortunately I didn't design the back in a way that would be possible, as the frame and glass holder are flush.

I need 2 shackles also, my back is missing 2. When I get around to it, I will try silver soldering pins to small pieces of steel. If SS does not hold, brazing will.

I make GG from 8x10 picture frame glass. If Thai glass is all metric, learn to cut down bigger glass. I taught myself glass cutting in a couple hours.

    I get grit from here.

Thanks Randy. I can cut glass no problem. I just need grit. And shackles.

Can you tell me which grit to buy? Ian Grant on APUG recommends #400 & #600 Silicon Carbide, but I don't know that translates to the nomenclature on that website.

Well, that doesn't work. The grit is $2.75 for a quarter pound, and the shipping is $45 by the cheapest method....

I think I'll just use sandpaper.

Clover brand is a known worldwide.

You may find Clover valve grinding paste anywhere engines are repaired. Then find where they buy parts. Tiny steel tins, almost like snuff tins, at least that's how USA sells it, but as the site below shows, 1lb tins are also packaged.

Here is a site that describes it. I am sure it is used in Thailand. Only product extant.

Well, it seems to be available here, as there is a distributer. Now I just need to find a shop.
