It fits into the slot above the rear chrome bar in your second photo, the bow in the spring facing the front of the enlarger. When you insert a lens board, the spring pushes it against the front slot so it doesn't wiggle.

The spring is supposed to be held in place by a tab in the center of that bar. Remove the two screws that hold the bar, and if the tab is not broken off, fit the spring in place and reinstall the bar. Someone may have taken it apart without knowing how it was designed to go together.
Remove the light souece and the condenser if it is present. Then tilt the enlarger head 90 degree to make it easier to see what you are doing.
