Re: Post YOUR Red Dot Artar Pics

The Magnar II is currently out on loan to a friend who owns a technology company.

The Magnar II is a curious optic. It was designed specifically to enlarge 5x5 aero recon film into 10x10 aero recon film with as much resolution as possible. It's best aperture is f8. I used it as a 4x5 enlarging lens on the Durst 138 to make prints... only to discover fiber base or any other print paper cannot resolve any where near what this optic is capable of putting on the paper or make the print any better than the APO NIkkor, EL Nikkor or RDA or Componon S that was used in it's place. The edges of the film grain was extremely well defined with the Magnar II compared to the other optics..

It was parked after this failed experiment and the 180mm APO Nikkor went back on the Durst 138 for making 4x5 prints. I used a 240mm Red Dot Artar to make 5x7 - 13x18cm prints on the Durst back in the day.

Any chance you have a photo of oneyou could post? Also, how did you come upon yours and do you have any suggestions on how to locate one? Pls PM me if possible. L

Thanks, Dave and Jim. A small correction -- I had re-taken it in better light three years later (in 2007). Same camera, lens and exposure -- but with a greater range of light values in the scene. The first time I had only 4 stops, measured with the Pentax digital spot meter. The one I printed had about 7.5 stops in the scene (slightly earlier in the day). Negative was developed in a tray in Ilford PQ Universal Developer, 1:28 for 5 or 6 minutes at 68F.

The first time the sun was starting to get low -- I took it right before the image of my boys below (w/ a 159mm lens on 8x10). The redwoods of the 4x10 can be seen in the upper left.

    Alabama Hills
    24" RD Artar, 4"x10" film
    Platinum/palladium print

This is closer to the proper color. The Yosemite image above is mighty purple. Scanned these on a simple HP office 3-way.
There is no sky -- the white is the east side of the Sierras. Sort of got washed out.
