    Still working on this.

Using RC servos I have very reliable 1/2 second shutter speed with adjustable flash sync.

I was hoping for faster, but not happening with this setup. however the flash will freeze motion, obviously...

I will install it and use it for studio work.

If you want cheaper parts, how about a stepper motor?

It's occurred to me recently that old-style doorbells have an appropriate-size solenoid with spring return that would be strong enough for smaller Packards. They're made to run on 24VAC or DC, but they could tolerate a 48V spike or whatever is necessary to quickly open the Packard, then would hold in the 12-24V range as discussed in this thread.

Edit: old school chimes actually run on 16V AC/DC, not 24. Well they will run on 24, or 12 for that matter, but the rated voltage is 16.

RC servos are stepper motors, thanks for the link

I build this intervalometer for my Bolex (after seeing Koyaanisqatsi) using only a servo and off-the-shelf servo 'tester.' This may give you ideas.

There are in fact 2 solenoids inside, in a shared plastic housing. A hacksaw would quickly tun that into 1.

You can buy the Nutone interior separately, for $7 more than the complete chime, but the photo shows the solenoids.
