The capital building lobby is worth a visit if they will let you photograph

I like the Great Salt Lake itself and the salt flats on the other side (west) of the lake.

Don't forget the Wasatch range! Also across the border in Nevada on 80 there might still be the remains on an AAF training base across the way from the casinos, where the B-29 crews pracrticed for dropping the A bomb. Ominous!

Beehives, and other great hairdos on the women.

Drive Northeast to Park City. Either cross over to Heber City and loop down the eastern backside of the Wasatch, past man-made lakes and high desert. If you have a rental car and are brave, there is a dirt road that goes from Park City to Brighton, along the crests of the mountain ridges. I did it in two wheel drive.

It's the west, if you don't put 500 miles on the odometer, you ain't been anywhere.

Do not go to the capital building. It is closed for several years undergoing renovation. You can not get in.

Any of the other suggestions should work though. You should be able to find something up any of the nearby canyons. I would probably go up Little Cottonwood canyon past the Alta ski resort and into the Albion basin. Beautiful wildflowers a month ago that will be gone by now, but there is still a lot there to shoot. An easy hike to Cecret Lake might be beneficial.

Be more specific... what kind of subjects are you after? There's great opportunities for landscapes (the Great Salt Lake, Wasatch and Uinta moutnains), as well as architecture and (unfortunately) industrial stuff.

Being from Detroit, I shoot a lot of "Urban Landscapes", and professionally I am an architect, so I shoot architecture commercially. When travelling, I look for things that are unusual- not the classic Ansel Adams stuff. Industrial sites, man made stuff, ruins/remains, and sometimes natural features like Great Salt Lake. We are considering a drive to Arches N.P. (I know, Ansel stuff).

If you like industrial landscapes you may want to visit the now defunct and abandoned Geneva Steel plant just outside Provo. Th best views of the Great Salt Lake are (in my opinion) from Antelope Island State Park near the town of Syracuse.
Arches is a good 5 hour drive from Salt Lake City and to the best of my knowledge was never photographed by Ansel Adams.
