Re: Ansel Adams' portrait of tragedy

Sometimes I come across Ansel Adams images I’ve never seen.

Often, they’re not from his landscape portfolio, but from his client portfolio, like this one:

It looks like a mediocre photo...

Re: Mystery gray specks on backs of prints

I know of many people who make notes in pencil on the back of a print prior to exposing the paper. I do not know that that has ever caused a problem.

    Re: releases for buildings

For commercial use, a release is necessary for certain buildings. The Chrysler building comes to mind, as well as the lighting display on the Eiffel Tower. I am sure there are many more. If the...

  10. Re: Carl Chiarenza retrospective exhibit, Eastman Museum, Rochester, NY - Feb.-June,

The video on the site is quite wonderful. I did not realize he was making collages now (or at least at the time the video was made).
  11. Re: Shooting overhead (90 degree angle) with Sinar F1?

It is a Gitzo 2530 with a Manfrotto 131 Lateral Arm and a 10-lb sandbag counterweight. The Gitzo 3-series is sturdier and would be better if you need to go higher. If I need more height instead of...
  12. Re: Shooting overhead (90 degree angle) with Sinar F1?

Depends on how high above your subject you need to be. A boom arm and counterweight could work but if it is too long or not sturdy enough it could introduce vibrations that will take forever to stop....
  13. Re: how do I use the same lenses for different cameras?

How do wide angle lenses fare with the Technika/Cambo adapters? Don't they require a recessed board, at least for the Cambo?

Re: who do you use to publish your books?

I agree, Blurb's black and white is disappointing because of the color shifts, even page-to-page. Sort of inevitable with CMYK on an unsupervised press. Their color work is better, still not stellar....

Re: Tripods: Is Carbon Fiber worth the extra cost?

Not really. See Barry Thornton's experiments with light tripods vs hand-held. You'd be surprised. Plus a crappy tripod can give you false confidence to shoot at lower shutter speeds than it can...

Re: Tripods: Is Carbon Fiber worth the extra cost?

Just get the sturdiest tripod that you can afford and carry. A CF tripod is ideal, but a flimsy CF tripod is a waste of money.

    Re: Preparing for a book

I'm not sure why you would want an illustrator's opinion about a photo book. An art director, designer or even a curator would make sense.
