  1. Re: Planning Roadtrip for June in Middle/Western USA

Good point about the heat/season @DrewWiley. My time through the Sierras is typically mid/late September, and often up in the mountains where it's cooler.
You also bring up the issue of...
  2. Re: Planning Roadtrip for June in Middle/Western USA

I've done a long road trip similar to yours a few years ago. Basically a large loop of the Western US....WA, ID, MO, WY, UT, CO, AZ, CA, OR, NV.
My suggestion would be to plan on going to 3 or 4...

Re: Tripod Head Recommendations for 4x5

In defence of my balls, it really depends on the tightening mechanism. A decent one can still allow fine movement without being completely floppy.
I like to travel in the back country and...

Re: Show off your Large Format camera!

The merging of two technologies....photo of my 4x5 film camera taken with my iPhone.
Toyo Field in the field...or the forest as it were.
I guess this could be considered a self portrait if you...

Re: Backpack for 4x5 or 617

Very timely post. I've been thinking about this lately.
I tend to hike several miles in the mountains, and I've never been satisfied with photo-specific packs. They tend to be too heavy,...

Re: Harrison vs Wanderer 8x10 Dark Cloth

I just got a Wanderer 2 weeks ago. I'm impressed with the quality of the material and stitching. It's a fairly heavy piece of material and can stand up to a decent breeze. I've taken it out and...
  7. Re: How many film holders do you bring for a day out?

If I have a specific subject in mind and it's inanimate, I might just take 1 holder ( I call that a "Deer Hunter" day...1 shot).
The number of holders goes up from there..depending on how long I...
  8. Re: Traveling across oceans with a Mahogany camera

Thinking a bit more about this, I am actually surprised that "mahogany" would trigger anything...back again to my guitar experience. Most of my electric instruments (and many in general...eg. Gibson,...
  9. Re: Traveling across oceans with a Mahogany camera

It's a common issue with musicians who may travel with vintage guitars. Acoustics were often made with Brazilian Rosewood...electrics often had rosewood or ebony fretboards. Many touring musicians...
  10. Re: Film and winter temperature swings going on location

Ha, yes! Nice! I'll head over there for a read!
Also...yes, most moisture is rain in the low elevations, but higher up, it's the white stuff and the cold. ...even the Coast Mountains (not the...
  11. Re: Film and winter temperature swings going on location

Great advice Drew Wiley....I do use a carbon tripod. Weight is an issue as I tend to go far and carry winter camping gear as well as the camera components.
For stomping out a platform, I start with...
  12. Re: Film and winter temperature swings going on location

The diver's snorkel? Brilliantly crazy, but not something that I can't adapt. I have an Avalung system I use to use for back country skiing. I could simply use that without adding or adapting...

Re: Mini Tripods Solutions for Macro 4x5?

Thanks Corran! Sounds like the ideal solution. I agree about flipping the centre post upside down...PITA! ...and it doesn't address tight situations. For $99, this is an easy decision. The levelling...

    Re: I Wish They Would Make . . .

You could use one of those folding (aluminium or wood) suitcase racks that you see in every hotel room. They are light and really cheap....you can find them new for $25 at Home Depot. Bungie it to...

Nice! Have you had it for a while? Looks like a great deal.
  16. Re: Film and winter temperature swings going on location

Ah yes...and being on the west side of the Rockies, there is ample moisture in the air.
  17. Re: Film and winter temperature swings going on location

Yes...I suspect I'll be firing the shutter a few times to get it ready...and I'll need to experiment to see where speeds go to. When you mention extreme temperatures, at what point is that a...

    Ah yes...static...a very good point.
  19. Film and winter temperature swings going on location

I am taking my 4x5 into the great outdoors and particularly the Canadian winter. I am familiar with using my 35mm and 120, but I wondered if there are any particular considerations with LF film. I...

Re: Mini Tripods Solutions for Macro 4x5?

Even better....given that these are so small, I don't see any reason to go to carbon fibre. Also...I actually have a set of light knee pads that fit over pants! And I often have a Thermarest Z-Lite...

Re: Mini Tripods Solutions for Macro 4x5?

This is a great idea actually. I sometimes shoot in deep snow, so I could adapt the size of the ply to suit floatation....or rig up a threaded base to a snow shoe or ski.

Thanks...good option and I appreciate you have experience with your own 4x5....the Pedco wasn't selected for the cost, more for the form factor.

I was considering that....or an empty bag I can fill with dirt or snow when I get to a site. I wonder how stable it is when running through various adjustments? Have you tried this option?

Mini Tripods Solutions for Macro 4x5?
