    I've had similar problems using Rodinal and Tri-X at 1:100. It might have been a temperature issue, but I never did a scientific test to find out.

    It was a mistake of course (and I've fixed it since) but it's an old trick. Smearing grease (usually Vaseline--I'm not sure why) was a tried and true way of achieving soft focus. I guess they did...
