    Re: Darkroom timer apps question

    Thanks Doremus and Mr. Can.

I’ve been experimenting with some new sheet film development methods and at the same time it occurred to me these timer apps would be nice compared with my counting...
  4. Re: Film Reciprocity Failure Compensation Factors For Films

Ilford did the work properly. Their revised factors are good.

Kodak unfortunately only provides high level/rough indications in their tech docs so best to use their info like bookends and...
  5. Re: Velvia 50 4x5 and 8x10 and Fujicolor 160NS Professional 120 discontinued

For me at least, even if there was still something like ciba around, the cost of LF transparency film plus masking would be totally unaffordable. Imagine the cost per image of shooting something like...

    Darkroom timer apps question

    Hello.

There are several darkroom/film development timer apps for iPhone. I havenít tried any myself but they seem to mostly use red displays. Anyone with any experience with any of them know if...

Ilford reciprocity compensation factors (I think this is what OP means, and he wants equivalent info for other brands):

    Re: Digital Prints - Horrors

Inkjet prints can be superb. It requires skill in scanning, editing and printing.
  11. Re: Focus Stacking with 8x10 Large Format Film...Ben Horne

It’s pretty cool if it works well. I certainly wouldn’t mind learning how to do it with 4x5 once I get up and running with hybrid.

On the other hand when I see things like this I’m tempted to say...

LOL how many times is someone going to complain about no links. Seriously people, just go to YouTube and type in the name or subject. Yeesh.

  14. Re: Does a new luxury 8x10 camera make sense in 2021?

Inevitably in any fancy gear thread someone will make this ďWeston argumentĒ. Come on, thatís not the point. Sure, itís good to keep some perspective on all of this stuff (George Tice has been using...
  15. Re: Does a new luxury 8x10 camera make sense in 2021?

I’d worry about being disappointed. For $20,000+ I’d expect a lot more than slick materials. It would have to be the most usable, well designed/engineered, precision made, and rigid view camera ever....
  16. Re: Does a new luxury 8x10 camera make sense in 2021?

I like the description “luxury 8x10 camera”. I picture it coming with electric windows. :D

Yes, I grew up in the 80s.

In addition to this being a wonderful book, if you ever wanted a Tice (darkroom, silver) print, the high end pledges in this Kickstarter amount to less than half what you’d normally pay for those...

    Anyone else printing smaller?

I generally prefer relatively small photographic prints, partly because my favourite way to look at photographs has always been to sit down with a book. Anyhow my own prints have always been around...
  20. Re: Foma Classic paper and higher contrasts: anyone else having issues?

Before doing a full safelight test, which is a good idea anyway, you might try doing one run with all safelights off just to see if you get higher contrast (lighter high values).
  21. Re: Free-standing dust attractors/filters any good?

IQAir seems like overkill for my application. I’m just interested in reducing the amount of visible dust strictly for photographic purposes.
  22. Re: Free-standing dust attractors/filters any good?

Thanks everyone so far for the detailed experiences. I must say this seems more encouraging than I expected :) Seems I should really look into this some more.
  23. Free-standing dust attractors/filters any good?

Luckily I havenít ever had out-of-the-ordinary dust problems, but if there is anything that can potentially cut down dust it certainly couldnít hurt. Those floor/free-standing devices of various...

Re: Volume \ flow rate for RC print wash

You don’t really need running water with a constant flow.

Washing is a diffusion process. Fixer and related complexes diffuse out of the emulsion/paper into the thin layer of water at the paper...

Re: An Anthology Of Silver Prints

Actually what makes it work for me (based on how it looks on my screen which of course might be inaccurate) is the graphic quality of the combination of subject matter and rendering. Black and white...
  26. Re: Does a Photograph's medium change your opinion of it?

    These analogies arenít very good.

Just say a photograph isnít finished until itís finished instead of contorting this business six ways from Sunday.

Re: Plastics question for film developing

    Hi r_a_feldman,

It ended up being a non-problem, but I tried replacing the smooth channels with textured. That did the trick, but the problem in the first place was simply that for the test runs,...

    Margin?

It’s properly called the part outside where the picture goes.
  32. Re: Does a Photograph's medium change your opinion of it?

That’s not true. Photography is not unique when it comes to the obsession with technical matters.

Best of luck. I hope the show is very successful. I remember seeing some of your work on here a few years ago and it was excellent.

    Yup!
  36. Re: My experience with 20th Century Camera's 5x7 reel

I can't say whether or not your reel will hold the sheets securely enough for inversion. I'd still try it though, just to see if it is doable. Costs you a sheet of film and a liter of B&W chemistry....
  37. Re: My experience with 20th Century Camera's 5x7 reel

    Kmallick,

One thing that stood out to me in your process description is the swizzling, which in general is a terrible agitation technique. Did you try inversion?

    I made a 4x5 insert for the...

Re: Plastics question for film developing

I was able to solve the problem so it is now perfect. Film slides out like a charm.

I’d still love to make this thing out of stainless but I doubt that will happen.

Re: RA-4/color darkroom printing in 2021

I would say no. The remaining reason to do darkroom work, in my opinion, is really just that you enjoy it more than working digitally.
