    Re: Portraits from 2022

With portraiture, LF excels at 'directness', and Francis is showing some great examples of that!
  2. Re: Century Master Studio Camera Restoration

Does the treaded rod/nut work ok? If so, great! If not, you might replace them with an ACME threaded rod and nut. My original didn't work well anymore, and so that's what I did. I did have to have...
  3. Re: Century Master Studio Camera Restoration

Louis, I didn't know about the brown paint on the Master. Mine is a 7a, if memory serves, and the metal parts looked like they were originally black. Thanks for the correction!

  4. Re: Century Master Studio Camera Restoration

I used Rustoleum Rust Converter. This leaves a nice black finish, and it chemically changes the rust.
  5. Re: What is your digital camera “scanning” setup?

I don't have any Canon gear, and so I don't know about the 100mm.....If you are scanning at 1x, well, you'd want the 1x Rodagon version. (I have both.) That would mean you'd scan a sensor sized area...

  8. Re: Intrepid 8x10 Mk III - Post your thoughts on design.

    Great start!

File some finger grips for back removal. I used a quality Sinar to smallr board from Ebay for cheap which I mounted to the camera, and then I used Toyo 110 boards. Linhof technica...

    Re: Intrepid 5x7 opinions

The price is such that you can get one and try it out. If it works for you, that's great! If not, you can likely sell it for very little loss. Think of it as a rental fee. Another option: Sell...
  10. Re: Intrepid 8x10 Mk III - Post your thoughts on design.

I contact cemented a piece of epdm rubber to the bottom of the front standard. I filed some finger holds to remove the back.

  12. Re: About Joe Cornish and the scope of the Large Format Photography Forum

Doesn't it come down to: grow or die? Without the "small formats" discussions, for example, this would be a pretty quiet place. A priori purity tends not to do too well when it's applied to the...

Re: 504 De Vere Bench Lens 4X5 Advice

For 4x5? I used a Nikkor 135mm with my 504....you can get lens boards with various sized holes/threads. I have a bunch of lens boards.....somewhere.....

Re: Help me choose 4x5 camera to buy in 2022

Just as an aside, if you need a studio roll film system, I highly recommend the Fuji GX680. They are super cheap. The bodies, lenses and accessories are very high quality. You can use multiple...

Re: Help me choose 4x5 camera to buy in 2022

Yeah, don't get a CC-401. There are ton of better cameras, from Linhof, Toyo, Horseman, Cambo, Sinar.......that aren't expensive at all. Keh, for example, has a Sinar F1 for $170, a toyo G for...

Re: Help me choose 4x5 camera to buy in 2022

I suppose Linhof.....For studio, Sinar and Arca Swiss. Given what you're doing, I'd get a new Chamonix. It's lighter than some of the older cameras. Use it for a year or two, and see if you run...

Re: Help me choose 4x5 camera to buy in 2022

Decide what you want to photograph. For example, a camera that's good for long hikes won't be as ideal in a studio as a specialized camera..... Figure out, generally, what kind of lenses you want to...

  33. Re: CatLABS X FILM 80 MKII now available in 8X10

Naw, it's often off by a lot! Honestly, using reciprocity characteristics for a similar film is often just as good of a starting point as manufacturer's suggestions. If the film is all cut from the...

  37. Re: F/9.0 lenses, what's your tips/trick for better viewing?

I agree with Daniel: That type of arrangement works great!

One used to be able to buy Sinar bellows frames cheaply. At one point I used them to make my own viewing bellows, but any old Horseman...
  38. Re: Sinar P1 4x5 - connection to tripod head

There is also a Chinese copy of the pan/tilt that one can buy new. My camera is packed away, and I'm super busy today, but if someone doesn't measure for you before then, I can do it on Friday.
  39. Re: Sinar P1 4x5 - connection to tripod head

It's much lighter. It's just as sturdy. Put a camera on both. Balance them properly. Lock them down. Tap the end of the rail. Compare. With my examples, the Sinar head was better in this...
  40. Re: Sinar P1 4x5 - connection to tripod head

I, too, prefer the Sinar pan/tilt head to anything else I've used over the years with my Sinar, and, yes, I've tried a 405. But Jeff's right, there are lots of Arca plates big enough for the purpose.
