Re: Ilford ULF annual order period for 2021

Doesnít look that way. Freestyle charges $150 for Hp5 8x10 and $98 for 4x10Ö thatís like 30% more expensive. I think Iíll keep cutting it myselfÖ

Re: Ilford ULF annual order period for 2021

Is it cheaper than just buying 8x10 and cutting it yourself in half? Iím also wondering whether order some 4x10 myself but if thereís no real advantage then Iím not sure.

  4. Re: Availability of Fujichrome Velvia 50, 4x5 sheet film

I know this is controversial but I think Velvia is overrated. Itís just a bit more contrasty (mostly because the shadows fall darker more quickly), a bit more vivid, and with a definite red cast. All...

Re: Color paper storage in refrigerator

Personally, Iíve never seen any ill effects with cycling film or paper, but I donít keep them in a fridge, rather in a wine cooler at about 65F. Iím just trying to make sure they donít get to 90F in...
  6. Re: Availability of Fujichrome Velvia 50, 4x5 sheet film

I fully agree about Proviaó and itís just slightly more resilient to being underexposed / resolving shadows. Velvia is just so unforgiving.

The new E100 is quite amazing too, but oh, even more...
  7. Re: landscape infintity focus: what aperture do you prefer or use?

What you say is perfectly reasonable.

However be sure that you really have nothing ďnearĒ and be mindful of longer focal distances (which we tend to use for far shots), as they reduce the depth of...
  8. Re: Film holders hair too small for 13x18 - 5x7

I canít speak to the holders but you can just use a small rotary paper trimmer inside a dark bag/tent (assuming you donít have access to to darkroom).

Just set it and secure it so that it trims...

    Re: 300mm lens 4x5" landscape

What I carry for hiking with my 4x5 is a Nikkor M 300mm f9. Unlimited coverage for 4x5, can be used even for 8x10 in a pinch, very light.

To me thatís the best trade off. An f5.6 will be a heavy...
  10. Suggest a 12" (300mm) lens for portrait work on 8x10?

Just a thought. I have several 300mm f4.5 barrel lenses because they were cheap. If you are willing to approach portraits with film like you do wet plate (without using strobes), ie. making exposures...
  11. Re: Suggest a 12" (300mm) lens for portrait work on 8x10?

Could you explain what didnít work with the ones you tried and maybe a bit more of the type of look that youíre after? Itís hard to suggest without knowing more about your preferences.

    Re: Landscape 5x7: Chamonix 57N3 or 45H-1 ?

Have you considered just making the jump to 8x10? Every step costs money.... unless itís very clear to you that you wonít go there....
  13. After all, why not? Why shouldn't I fall into THIS hole?

To me, thereís room for everything, and you donít need to choose. Itís like choosing between Mozart and Beethoven. Well, I choose both.

Thereís photography where LF, as a tool, excels and thereís...
  14. Lane Dry Plates: What is a practical ISO rating?

  15. Re: 8x10 Photography Compared to 4x5 Photography?

  16. Re: 8x10 Photography Compared to 4x5 Photography?

Of course itís inversely proportional! The best photographic works ever were shot with Minox (8◊11 mm) and 110 film!!

  17. What is the current trend on using dark cloth?

For 4x5, during the not summer times I just use my jacket. Summertime I pack a dark cloth.

For 8x10 I always pack a dark cloth. Jacketís a bit too tight sometimes.

  22. Finding tripods for Large Format is kinda hard (daunting)? Favorite LF tripod?

You can get a 8x10 that weights 6.5 lbs, two lenses and 2-3 light film holders, etc, you can get everything you need under 25lbs, add water/food etc, and you have a doable load for long hikes.

    Is...
  23. Finding tripods for Large Format is kinda hard (daunting)? Favorite LF tripod?

Címon guys, a ries tripod is 12 lbs and their head is 4 lbs.

You can get a CF tripod in the 3-4 lbs range and a leveling head for another lb. thatís like 3-4 times lighter.

    Iím sure all the...

  27. Finding tripods for Large Format is kinda hard (daunting)? Favorite LF tripod?

There is already a separate thread on ďbest Ē. We canít make sweeping statements here. Letís try to answer OPís question.

The problem though is that the OP doesnít say what 8x10 camera he has or...
  28. Finding tripods for Large Format is kinda hard (daunting)? Favorite LF tripod?

Whatís the use case? If youíre hiking, a wood tripod and a ries head is not a (realistic) option for most people.

Look into a CF tripod from Gitzo, FLM or RSS instead, or a Leofoto if cost is...

  32. Re: Lane Dry Plates: What is a practical ISO rating?

  34. Re: Lane Dry Plates: What is a practical ISO rating?
