  1. Re: Kit recommendations for a complete beginner

I would start with a monorail camera as those are very reasonable and plentiful on the used market. You're only going to be able to afford one modern lens and I suggest a 150mm or 180mm. You could...

    Re: Tripod Holes

Would like to see more. I've been doing some similar stuff in South Dakota. I use period correct lenses and am shooting both wet plate and dry plate. My three favorite photographers are FJ Haynes,...
  3. Re: How to decide for a set of three lenses for a Linhof Technika IV

Recessed boards are a pain to change aperture or shutter speed on. Hard to see numbers, harder to change settings. I'm also thinking it will be difficult to find center filters for lenses out of...
  4. Re: How to decide for a set of three lenses for a Linhof Technika IV

I scan everything and run it through software. Vignetting is not a problem for me. The center filters are a lot of $$ so software is a no-brainer for me. The biggest thing I don't like about the...
  5. Re: How to decide for a set of three lenses for a Linhof Technika IV

    1. No. I use the 90mm because I can do more lens movements with it, and I generally am photo'ing exteriors where I can simply back up to frame.

    2. See above. I actually don't have a center...
  6. Re: How to decide for a set of three lenses for a Linhof Technika IV

I find my most used are 90, 135, 180. Also have 75 and 300. I use the 75mm for interiors, the 300mm for details and landscape isolation. You're going to find you use large format a bit differently...
  7. Re: Greta Thunberg wet plate photos by Shane Balkowitsch

You don't dump the fixer from wet plate. It's poured back into the bottle and reused many times.:)

  10. Re: Greta Thunberg wet plate photos by Shane Balkowitsch

Wet plate has fairly narrow dynamic range and it can be hard to guess how the UV light is affecting it. Also there is a very sensitive relationship between exposure time and development time. ...
  11. Re: Greta Thunberg wet plate photos by Shane Balkowitsch

Looks ok to me. Hard to judge without seeing original. The silver tends to scan a bit hot. Dynamic range of wet plate is tighter than film too.

  12. Re: Greta Thunberg wet plate photos by Shane Balkowitsch

It's pretty rare to have a chance to photo the current media sensations. They are very ephemeral and access is highly controlled. Working within the constraints of wet plate increases the...

Re: My trip for fall colors

In the Dakotas the wind blows trucks off the highway and has twice blown trains off the track. I use a heavy Berlebach tripod on those days and set up with legs spread and no extension.

  18. Re: Lightest & Most Compact Tripod for Wista 45SP that is Also Reasonably Priced?

For LF a tripod and head are pretty critical. I'm betting the tripod you buy a few months after the cheap one will be the one you end up with. I would budget $250 as a minimum.

You may have some trouble fitting a preexisting hole. Watch for rapid rectilinear lens that covers 8x10 and ask seller what outside diameter is.

A year ago I bought a 12 in. Voightlander Petzval c1862 with flange for $500. I love that lens! Have it on a 5x7 Korona right now, will eventually get either full plate or 8x10 for it.

  37. Re: Allowing Lens Availability to Dictate Format Choice

Could it just be that a relative handful of people are buying dozens of lenses? I have x8 lenses made before 1860 and three more made 1861-1865, plus about 6 made 1900-1930 and 5 modern lenses...
