I agree, Blurb's black and white is disappointing because of the color shifts, even page-to-page. Sort of inevitable with CMYK on an unsupervised press. Their color work is better, still not stellar....
Not really. See Barry Thornton's experiments with light tripods vs hand-held. You'd be surprised. Plus a crappy tripod can give you false confidence to shoot at lower shutter speeds than it can...
Just get the sturdiest tripod that you can afford and carry. A CF tripod is ideal, but a flimsy CF tripod is a waste of money.
Sounds like the lenspen things.
I have and thoroughly enjoy his book of Daguerrotype portraits (accompanied by poetry), Another Way of Doing Things. There is a bit of the behind the scenes info at the end of the book.
I'm not sure why you would want an illustrator's opinion about a photo book. An art director, designer or even a curator would make sense.
I had terrible problems getting the glass of a used negative carrier clean, until I tried dish soap.
Read the manual?
Please tell me you're not shooting with such a long center column extension. A sure recipe for blurred photos.
I was hoping for something motorized.
Not LF, but dead.

The New Yorker has a nice piece about Richard Renaldi's work, making LF portraits of fast-food workers.

Why all the fuss? Just crop square. (BTW, square is my preferred cropping.)
Thanks for the link Great interview. I feel I know you now. I have most certainly appreciated your images.
Thanks for posting. I really enjoyed the book. I was surprised and delighted to see the lead photo was of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala from 1970. I was there in the early '70s as the assistant on a...
Put it this way, this week's special is Stewed Motorist.
Just watched The B-Side: Elsa Dorfman's Portrait Photography on Netflix. Interesting story about her and the Polaroid 20x24 camera. Some info at https://bsidefilm.com

Flute?
Beekeeper playing a flute? For someone with such strong negative opinions of his work, you most certainly have an in-depth knowledge of Avedon's oeuvre. I have never seen that one.
More grist for the mill:...
The book is titled, "In The American West" for a reason--it is not meant to be a book about the American West but rather what Avedon saw of interest there. His photos are of people, his interest is...
Thanks, guys. I had never heard of Lik nor seen any of his work. Unfortunately, I did a search and now I need to page through a Friedlander or Weston book to cleanse my visual cortex.
You certainly don't like Avedon. For my edification, could you cite someone as an example of an equally prolific people photographer that you would like? And by the way, Avedon did not not work...
No one is "machine-gunning" with an 8x10, even with all the resources and assistants Avedon had. You may dislike Avedon, his style or technique, but when you cannot see through the camera, you can...
I can't speak for what might be involved in setting up your printer, etc. but the piezography prints that I have had made by Cone Editions are amazingly beautiful, far richer than what I can produce...
I know there are those in this forum who don't particularly like Richard Avedon's work, but there is an interesting article in today's NY Times, some of which deals with the difference he found...
I prefer not to pre-visualize. I often find the results of such overthinking to be dry and uninteresting. I much prefer to react to the scene or subject. In other words, the photo will often take me...
That would be such a personal variable it would be pretty impossible to include it in such a chart. Light source, condenser/diffusion, lens choice, paper, personal taste--the individual needs to take...
I wasn't aware the Massive Dev App had print times.
Thanks all. I have been using most of the techniques described (except wetting with my tongue). One of the things I find frustrating is when I dilute the spotting color to lighter shades of gray, the...
I have to say upfront mixed feelings about print spotting--it is a necessary for me, something I put off until I have no other choice but to do it. I clean my negatives pretty well but there is...
Why would they insist on photos vs scans if it just being posted online? Are the prints too large to scan?
Lucky you. I have never seen one that cheap and I've had my eye out for one for a while...it has to be local, no one would ship something that big. I missed out on one this spring because I didn't...
Yes, a pedestal stand (Arkay, Manfrottto, Foba) is ideal but start at over a grand. And most are over 6' tall. A bit pricey to try something out.
I use a Manfrotto arm with a counter weight, too. I also like to keep the subject surface low to the ground and tilted about 10º so I am not working off a ladder to compose--maybe just a step stool...
That is how the final book file is to be delivered to the printer, something the designer will do. It says nothing about the image profile or type to be supplied to the designer.
I had a good experience with Bookmobile as a printer. I believe they also provide fulfillment services. In any case, once you have settled on a printer be prepared to modify your files to conform to...
In the past I have dry-mounted my prints, sometimes with a border, sometimes trimmed flush (the print, not the board). Recently, I have taken to using linen tape hinges to mount prints, liking the...
