Could you explain what didn’t work with the ones you tried and maybe a bit more of the type of look that you’re after? It’s hard to suggest without knowing more about your preferences.
Have you considered just making the jump to 8x10? Every step costs money.... unless it’s very clear to you that you won’t go there....
To me, there’s room for everything, and you don’t need to choose. It’s like choosing between Mozart and Beethoven. Well, I choose both.
There’s photography where LF, as a tool, excels and there’s...
I’d suggest you spend a plate where you point to a uniformly lit subject, even a wall, and make 4 exposures by sliding the dark slide in 1/4’s covering a range of 4 stops around where you think it...
I expect more difference between two photographers using the same format than between two formats from the same photographer. Which is to say that tools are tools and as long as you know how to use...
Of course it’s inversely proportional! The best photographic works ever were shot with Minox (8×11 mm) and 110 film!!

For 4x5, during the not summer times I just use my jacket. Summertime I pack a dark cloth.
For 8x10 I always pack a dark cloth. Jacket’s a bit too tight sometimes.
Well, there’s several options for new 4x5 out there but I think this is the only option I know for a new “studio” portrait camera. That’s really the novelty.
Just out and already out of stock? :-)
I’m dreaming one of those too. They’re just so beautiful! I love in the video you hear roosters in the background. Would probably go with the non native holder, though, to be able to switch to film...
Congrats! I really wish I could go see it.

You can get a 8x10 that weights 6.5 lbs, two lenses and 2-3 light film holders, etc, you can get everything you need under 25lbs, add water/food etc, and you have a doable load for long hikes.
Is...
C’mon guys, a ries tripod is 12 lbs and their head is 4 lbs.
You can get a CF tripod in the 3-4 lbs range and a leveling head for another lb. that’s like 3-4 times lighter.
I’m sure all the...
Ah yes, read too fast :-)
I was ready to order 1,000 sheets lol
Xtol 1+1, D76 1+1, PMK all work great. Those are the ones I’ve tried.
Wait, what? Are you talking Pancro 400?
Where’s $45 for 25 8x10? I haven’t seen it cheaper than around $125.
There is already a separate thread on “best ”. We can’t make sweeping statements here. Let’s try to answer OP’s question.
The problem though is that the OP doesn’t say what 8x10 camera he has or...
What’s the use case? If you’re hiking, a wood tripod and a ries head is not a (realistic) option for most people.
Look into a CF tripod from Gitzo, FLM or RSS instead, or a Leofoto if cost is...
They do — for the H model, not the F.
Just incredible, thanks for sharing.
Mine was directly from them, a few years ago. They may or may not have changed this since.
A couple of notes... reciprocity isn’t the same in general so the numbers may not be directly comparable. It would be best to run some test comparisons in the <1 for FP4+ so that reciprocity is not a...
I haven’t done a lot of comparisons against other developers, but I find Diafine works very well with your plates.
My experience with shooting in a studio environment with incandescent light and modifiers is that both ISO 25 and ISO 2 plates need 2.5 stops more light (is. the “true” iso is lower by 2.5 stops)...
For anything more than a morning hike nearby, I will take ALL of them for the system I’m carrying.
For 8x10 that’s 8. 4 in my car, 4 in my bag. I will load them with b&w or color depending on what...
I got rid of it with a combination of running hot tap water and rubbing with my fingers, and alcohol wipes. Took time but it went away.
I agree it’s really unnecessary for them to use this glue or...
I run them with flowing water for 10 min using a Paterson washer (obviously they just sink to the bottom) and then 30 sec photo flo on a tray. Never had an issue with the emulsion.
Wow that’s 6lbs just of frame....
You’re right that the issue is the exposed bellows on the arca. I have a foldable 8x10 camera wrapped in the Wanderer camera wrap in a 70L osprey that allows you to open the front in full thanks to...
This looks really elaborate. How many miles can you hike with this thing?
Do not forget to close the triple box back after loading your holders and before you open the tent! It’s a common ooops and it’s not fun.
Practice loading the holders with a sacrificial sheet if...
This is a very interesting observation. If it were the opposite, then landscape photography wouldn’t be possible as the further away the camera is from the object, the further the lens would have to...
Geez, a 100 pack of 4x10 is $20 but minimum shipping cost is $22 (to US). That’s savage!
That was a good summary.
This question comes up frequently. If you want minimum setup time with some quirks and limitations, go H, if you want max flexibility and backpacking compactness, go F.

This is not Stranger Things. Get used to the upside down, don’t resist it. After 30-50 shots (depending on the person), it will be second nature. You may even start printing upside down! ;-)
Maybe the page is not up to date. I bought it a couple of months ago and received in 2 separate components. This was for the 8x10 kit.
Point is, even if mine was an exception somehow (it only 1...
Regarding the B&S kit, I think they give you now the collodion and the bromo iodizer separately, so the clock starts ticking when you mix it at home.
Wow, gets really dreamy around the edges. Good for portraits!
