Re: Wide angle lenses for 8x10

Dan and Daniel are right. Regular 168mm and 180mm Dagor of f/6.8 won't fully cover 8x10 at infinity. The Zeiss Dagor 18cm f/9 covers, but that lens is hard to find and is expensive.

    Ulrich,

I have used SSXL 210mm on the Alpinist X without any issues.

    Thanks.

    Re: Presence in 8x10 photography

What about wet plate photography that the finished varnished plates are the final things that can't be shared via computer screens? And all the old lenses that you can only use with larger cameras?

I had a similar feeling when I first looked Edward Weston's prints on the wall of LA city Library. All 8x10 contact prints. I have never had the same feeling when I looked at Ansel Adams enlarged...

    Re: Voigtländer Apo-Lanthar 300mm shutter

Well, there are some old 12" f/4.5 lenses mounted in Compound shutters that appear at ebay now and then. You have to watch and ask the sellers. Many times I get my shutters this way. Buy them and...

    Re: Voigtländer Apo-Lanthar 300mm shutter

Must be a misprint. No way that lens can fit into a Compound IV shutter. I have an Apo-Skopar 45CM in Compound IV. But I have seen pictures of Apo-Lanthar 30cm mounted in Ilex #5 shutter.

Re: Polaroid 20x24 Cameras and standard films?

    Ari,

I use 12" for full or half body and it is perfect. But for head shots, even a 14" lens does not look quite right. My lenses of choice for 810 heads is Universal-Heliar 42cm and Dallmeyer 3A. ...

    Re: 4x5 Portrait lens & Chamonix F2

Heliar and Apo-Lanthar are not soft focus lenses. Wide open at 4.5, Lanthar is bit sharper. Both have low contrast and that changes when you shop down. I tested my apo-lanthar 21cm against my sironar...

    Re: 4x5 Portrait lens & Chamonix F2

    John,

If you don't like Heliar, apo-lanthar or soft focus lenses, why not just pick up a dagor lens of 8 1/4 or 9 1/2 inches. Wide open at F/6.8, it has a nice glow for portraits. Stopped down, it...

Re: Polaroid 20x24 Cameras and standard films?

    Monty,

Good to know this. I always thought a longer lens is preferred for portraits. For example, an 18 inch lens for 8x10 portraits because you add 8 and 10 together. It seems ULF life size...

Just watched the B-Side. Wonderful film. So the camera used 1200mm lens? It seems the sitters were placed only 8-12 feet away. Did Elsa used a shorter lens?

Re: 16 inch f/3 Hugo Meyer Speed lens

Yes, the same lens and it covers 8x10. It is more like 3.5 because of the aperture structure.

    Re: Getting started in 11x14"

    Greg,

Isn't 11x14 negative big enough for pt/pd printing? Why do you consider making digital negatives out of 11x14 negatives?

    Just curious....

    Thanks.

  33. Re: Voigtländer Euryscop No. 6 Series IV Real World Coverage ?

Yes in the style of Sturges. Like when you use a 240mm-250mm lens with 8x10 portraits. You have to understand a 24" lens is considered normal lens for 16x20 format, just like a 12" in the case of...
  34. Re: Voigtländer Euryscop No. 6 Series IV Real World Coverage ?

To give you an example: would you use a 250mm lens for 8x10 head/shoulder shots? Do they look good? Yes you can use a 250mm for 8x10 portrait, but only at a distance, maybe 15-20 feet away. Many...
  35. Re: Voigtländer Euryscop No. 6 Series IV Real World Coverage ?

It covers both 14x17 and 16x20 for head/shoulder shots, but the pictures don't look pleasing because the lens is too short for these formats.
  36. Re: Goerz Doppel Anastigmat Serie III No 7 360mm f6 COVERAGE or lens catalogue

People don't care much about corners when doing portraits which are usually done at close distance with extended bellows. In another world, a lens that covers 11x14 at infinity will probably cover...
  37. Re: Voigtländer Euryscop No. 6 Series IV Real World Coverage ?

I looked at reflected upside down head/shoulder images on my 16x20 ground glass and didn't make the exposure. It covers and I think you can even use 14x17 if not for head/shoulders.

  40. Re: Goerz Doppel Anastigmat Serie III No 7 360mm f6 COVERAGE or lens catalogue

I know Protar V 7a 39cm has an image circle of 33 1/2 inch and will cover 20x24 at its smallest stop. The E. Klauss version I have does cover, at least.
