Which begs the question for those of us who frequently purchase used LF lenses: how can we truly know, for a given used optic, especially if we are not intimately familiar with its "out of the box"...
Whatever works best for a given image (no matter if this means blown out highlights, greyed out featureless shadows, etc.) is how I define the term "technically perfect."
...love the separation of tonal values in the sky and the side-lit trees. Also maybe a sense of foreboding...leaving the serenity and sunshine and moving towards a colder, more darkly rugged and...
As my own final event-horizon comes ever closer...I feel more and more like sharing as much as possible in the hopes that others can find this to be of some use to their own journeys. I also like to...
Not that its always easy to tell much from my laptop...but if I am interpreting this with any accuracy this subject looks like a candidate to be photographed with a yellow/green filter and placing...
Regrets for not having kept up with this thread...if but for the vicarious adventure! Will try to check in more often, and in the meantime, Bryan don't forget to eat and sleep...and to turn your...
Chiming in late here...to say that Richard did mine a couple years back and since then the meter has been flawless! As many here know about Richard in these matters....he's da man!
Gosh and golly this is so interesting! Such intriguing history! Have never owned a 'Dorf...but now that I've been reading this thread, I'm thinking that I'll need to add one to my bucket list!
Bryan I would find myself so tempted to do a bit of wading - to give that log a bit of a (careful!) push...as I'd be very curious to see if it might somehow reposition itself as a nice diagonal upon...
But...if you're tripod's too short - can't you just lift it up and hold it really still
Until more or less recently...I, too, preached the gospel of overall weight - that in the scheme of things, a few extra pounds would be more than justified if this meant that the overall experience,...
Too many variables here for anyone to simply state that one should be getting "box speed." Also, while there seems to be a decent amount of info here with respect to various processing...
With the Heiland LED VC head (Zone 6 series 2 enlarger) being so bright - I tend to rate FP4+ at about half box speed - and process for 10-12 minutes at 70 F with 1:1:100 Pyrocat - in 6 individual...
hmmm...am thinking Richard's model with Martin's lighting setup - could be great!
...seems like in the vast realm of lens-related trivia - Fujinon would take the prize! Am I right?
My 100mm Companon-S (looks like the same vintage) has also been lacking f-stop clicks for quite some time, and I occasionally think about getting them back. Looking at your second image...I'm...
I like the composition generally...with the three strong lines converging towards the left horizon.
I'm a bit distracted by the crooked horizon line, and also I would possibly like to see the...
Here in northern(ish) Vermont…UGH!
Lots of experience here and I could go on forever…but instead, here is my attempt at a little tick-related entertainment, in the form of the worlds shortest...
Yeah...nice that those trees are bare so we can see the road!
Yes Indeed...BINGO! Thanks!
...looking forward to seeing how you incorporate those oar locks into adjustable legs. Nice job though...looks very sturdy!
Drew...I cannot believe I am saying this - but doing karaoke (likely just once) is actually on my bucket list! (but deer...playing with cantaloupe )
Taking your Gowland Pocket View? I'll be pressing mine into lots of service again in the upcoming months. Even though my 5x7 DIY plywood camera is almost as light, the rest of the 5x7 gear still...
Also use extreme caution if you are using ferricyanide for the retouching of black spots. First, use as weak a dilution as time will allow (otherwise, long after applying retouching fluid to the...
...wish we could get someone with truly deep pockets on board to re-create/reintroduce some "legacy" materials: Papers like the old Brilliant, Seagull, Portriga Rapid, Forte...films like Super XX,...
The town of Grafton is beautiful in the fall, as is Weston (Vt. Country Store location - a must see!). Route 100 is also a great suggestion, and if you can make it up to Sharon, and up over Bethel...
Wonderful!
Thank you...I find this very inspiring!
I spent some time in the presence of Jim Fitzgerald and his work a few years back - and now that I've also seen your "short and sweet"...
Mr. Can those wheels look perfect - and thanx for the link! I've actually promised my dear wife that I'll rehab our old Garden Way cart sometime soon - and am thinking that these wheels could do...
Wow that looks great!
I've been thinking for awhile (a long while) about doing something similar...but maybe using larger diameter wheels (like lightweight ones from a road bike) which might...
Well...I have a Zone VI model 2...and I absolutely LOVE IT!!
And about wall vs bench mounting? If your bench is truly sturdy...and if the legs of the bench can effectively rest on the...
ND filter on a pinhole? Think of the reciprocity failure! Maybe one could leave such a setup alone for about a week? Someone should try this! (won't be me).
But Greg...I'm intrigued by your...
When I sprung for a used but like new 210 Apo Sironar S lens last year, I tossed the standard-issue (ultra thin and flexible) lens cap, and pressed into service a 72mm screw-in "el cheapo" metal lens...
Any sort of crack/joint separation which in any way might connect the outside to the inside should be suspect. While the suggestion above regarding the light sanding and repainting with flat black...
What I don't understand is spending big bucks for a top flight LF lens and getting caps which are so thinly constructed that these can, if the lens is not stored and transported very carefully,...
If the pinkish color were only present in the shadows then I'd say it was something like crocein scarlet, which would be applied to help retain shadow details in prints. But this does not look so...
Would like to cobble together something like that Monobar, but for a Pentax 6x7 - maybe rig up with a 120mm Macro LF lens.
yes...some painters (and draw-ers) used lenses in their early "pre-photographic" era camera obscuras to help them in their craft. (also camera lucidas, which were a bit different). Many of the...
No...just a German classic (a humble 944) - in a color called "Maraschino Red:"

Green like the Toyo VX? That would be cool! Or, more like a British racing green? Love this on something like an old Jag. or MGA, even an older 911 - but on a camera I'm not so sure...hmmm...
