Re: Epson 4990 vs Nikon D850?

Thanks Gabe. I've made a note of your comments and will apply them next time I'm digitising. I think, as you say, a copy stand would help a lot. Autofocus is probably a good idea too — I used manual...

Re: Epson 4990 vs Nikon D850?

UPDATE August 24th 2022: I got a Kaiser Plano a few days ago. I've only digitized one neg with it so far, from my linhof Technorama 612. See it here on Flickr if you fancy: https://flic.kr/p/2nF8QbQ....

Re: Epson 4990 vs Nikon D850?

Gabe — that example image is outstanding. It makes the results I get from my flatbed look archaic, which I suppose they are. I've ordered a Kaiser LED lightbox and am looking forward to using it....

Re: Epson 4990 vs Nikon D850?

Thanks Hugh. I have most of the gear needed I think except the light panel. I think for Flickr purposes a single-shot with the D850 should suffice.

Re: Epson 4990 vs Nikon D850?

Yes — the pixel pitch thing had occurred to me but I think I'll give it a try and see how it turns out. I saw a video on YouTube which made the process look pretty straightforward.

Re: Epson 4990 vs Nikon D850?

UPDATE: I've been looking at digitized images on Flickr. One user there in particular has results that look to me much superior to my own flatbed scans. Example: https://flic.kr/p/2nBTVZi

    I think...

Re: Epson 4990 vs Nikon D850?

Thanks for that. I think I'm going to stick with the Epson for now. The DSLR route looks too complex for me at this point.

Re: Epson 4990 vs Nikon D850?

Thanks Alan. It sounds like quite a bit of work and possibly some expense [I'm on a tight budget].

The strobe I have is an ancient Bowens monobloc — I'm not sure what the CRI rating of it is.

Re: Epson 4990 vs Nikon D850?

Thanks Bernice. It does seem like using the DSLR for digitization is a bit inconvenient. If the results were going to be a lot better then maybe…

Re: Epson 4990 vs Nikon D850?

Thanks Greg. I'm reasonably happy with the results from the Epson 4990 for now. [I scan at 2400 DPI, which I read somewhere is the max. optical resolution of this scanner.]

    I'm not making prints,...

    Epson 4990 vs Nikon D850?

Can anyone tell me if I might get better images by photographing my 4x5 B&W negatives with a Nikon D850 instead of scanning them with my old Epson 4990 flatbed? I mean in terms of tonality and...
  12. Re: Which Lens Board for 90 5.6 Super Angulon on a Linhof Technika V?

    Thanks Bob.
  13. Which Lens Board for 90 5.6 Super Angulon on a Linhof Technika V?

I have just received a 90mm F5.6 Super Angulon for my Super Technika V.

Does anyone know if I need a lens board with a centered hole, or will it work with a lower-hole type? [The rear portion of...
  14. Re: Linhof Technika V - Ground Glass is Dim.

Thanks Bernice. This particular camera came from Japan — it has little areas of corrosion as though it has been stored for a long time. Nothing serious but I'm thinking these screws are probably, as...
  15. Re: Linhof Technika V - Ground Glass is Dim.

Thanks again David. I mailed them to ask which driver would be best for this application. [They have a .co.uk website and it appears they import from the USA, which is fine with me.]
  16. Re: Linhof Technika V - Ground Glass is Dim.

Thanks David. Off to take a look…
  17. Re: Linhof Technika V - Ground Glass is Dim.

Thanks. Some good tips there. I'll look for Wiha.
  18. Re: Linhof Technika V - Ground Glass is Dim.

Thanks. The drivers I have are too narrow / too thick in the blade. I don't know if there's a machine shop near here or not but I'll look.
  19. Re: Linhof Technika V - Ground Glass is Dim.

UPDATE: I have the ground glass now. It looks nice.
However, I couldn't loosen the screws that are holding the original glass in place: the screwheads are about 5mm wide but the slot is very narrow...

    Re: Wanderlust 4x5 Travelwide

Morten Kolve does 3D printed cameras which are very nice. They're on eBay. Name of the product is WillTravel. He does a variety of formats.
  21. Re: Linhof Technika V - Ground Glass is Dim.

Thanks Bob. The glass should be here in a few days. Looking forward to more brightness.
  22. Re: Linhof Technika — are Infinity Stops only for use with the Rangefinder?

Thanks. I had forgotten about gyro stabilizers. The rangefinder would be handy to have but it'll have to wait till I have spare cash for a new cam.
  23. Re: Linhof Technika — are Infinity Stops only for use with the Rangefinder?

Okay thanks for that. I'm going to look at setting the stops up tomorrow for the 135 Nikkor I have. I like to get the camera set-up as quickly as possible. [I don't plan on using the rangefinder any...
  24. Re: Which lenses fold up into your field camera? Linhof Tecnika, Horseman, etc. quest

Just in case the information might be useful to someone: a Nikkor-W 135mm F5.6 will fit into the folded Technika V on a flat lens board.

[I measure the hole that accomodates the front of the lens...
  25. Re: Linhof Technika V - Ground Glass is Dim.

Thanks Greg. I suppose I should have tried cleaning the glass before I bought the new one. Live and learn…
  26. Re: Linhof Technika V - Ground Glass is Dim.

Okay thanks. I looked at the hardware that secures the glass — 6 screws, a couple of plates and I think some shims. Hopefully fitting the new one won't be too difficult. I may put the old one on eBay...
  27. Re: Linhof Technika — are Infinity Stops only for use with the Rangefinder?

Thanks again Bob. I'll take a look at that.
  28. Re: Linhof Technika — are Infinity Stops only for use with the Rangefinder?

Thanks Bob. The cam that's in the camera is for a 135mm lens but the lens did not come bundled with the body [I have a Nikkor W 135 but it's out of focus if I use the existing 135 stop on the...
  29. Re: Linhof Technika — are Infinity Stops only for use with the Rangefinder?

Thanks. I can't see me using the rangefinder much either. When I had large-format cameras before, I used the ground glass to focus and it wasn't a problem. I think this Technika has 5 sets of...
  30. Re: Linhof Technika — are Infinity Stops only for use with the Rangefinder?

Thanks Bob. It has 3 scales fitted at the moment - 75, 135 & 250. I haven't investigated how to remove / fit them yet. If they just slide on then so much the better.
  31. Re: Linhof Technika — are Infinity Stops only for use with the Rangefinder?

Great. Thanks. I'll give that a try. I'm not sure if the existing stops have put divots inthe rail or not. I'll see when I move them I suppose.
  32. Re: Linhof Technika — are Infinity Stops only for use with the Rangefinder?

Thanks. That's what I'd guessed. [Information on how to set up & use them sems to be thin on the ground for some reason.]
  33. Linhof Technika — are Infinity Stops only for use with the Rangefinder?

The Super Technika V I recently acquired has 4 sets of infinity stops on the focus rail.

I'm not sure how to use / adjust them.

It also has distance scales for 3 focal lengths [How these work...
  34. Re: Linhof Technika V - Ground Glass is Dim.

Thanks. Hadn't thought of that. I bought a new glass from Linhof. I believe it should improve things quite a bit.
  35. Re: Linhof Technika V - Ground Glass is Dim.

Thanks David. The markings on the ground glass are something I was thinking about: I like as few markings as possible so I'll probaby go for the simple grid. [6x12 interests me but if I ever get a...
  36. Re: Linhof Technika V - Ground Glass is Dim.

    Great. Thanks Bob.
  37. Linhof Technika V - Ground Glass is Dim.

    I recently acquired a 1972 year model Technika V.

I'm finding the ground glass to be pretty dim.

Are more recent Technika ground glasses brighter?

Would I be able to fit one myself?

  38. Re: Schneider Angulon I Purchased - Is This a Problem?

I'm not that brave Jon but thanks.
  39. Re: Schneider Angulon I Purchased - Is This a Problem?

You make a good point. The camera I intended to use this lens with also needs work [Technika V]. I may try and do it myself if it doesn't look too difficult .
  40. Re: Schneider Angulon I Purchased - Is This a Problem?

Thanks Brian. That was an interesting page you linked to. As you say, the shutter dial does seem to want a lot of force to go beyond 1/250. The dial is also, as I said, very stiff to turn. I think it...
