  1. Re: Shooting mountain peaks with 4x5 and roll film. Foolish?

I've shot all the 10 highest peaks in Australia on roll film, 4x5, and 8x10. They are all ancient rounded hills but plenty steep enough as walk-ups.
The key strategy for me was to start early, go...

  5. Re: What is about the right size for a dark cloth for a 4x5" camera?

If you are going to get it sewn for you organise some fairly light stainless steel chain to be incorporated in the hem. This edge weighting is much better and safer than corner weights on a windy...

Re: Flare or light leak problem

Since the flare or light leak doesn't intrude on the rebate edges of the film it must be a in-camera problem. Two ways I've got results like this is in the past:

  8. Re: One more time: Tachihara 4x5 front cam loosens up. Solution?

I'm pretty sure that Tachihara shut their business in 2013 as no family successors were enthusiastic in continuing. The 300 year old Hidaka Shuri Cherry Blossom wood was also getting rare and really...
  9. Re: One more time: Tachihara 4x5 front cam loosens up. Solution?

It is a surprise that a Tachihara camera has no serial number. Usually it is hand written at the back of the bed of the camera. Unlock the rear standard and push it forward, advance the focussing...
  10. Re: One more time: Tachihara 4x5 front cam loosens up. Solution?

Interesting! Years ago I was a sales engineer marketing Tachihara camera in Australia. I got to see many of them and from unit to unit they were very consistent. I still have two 45GF for personal...
  11. Re: One more time: Tachihara 4x5 front cam loosens up. Solution?

I just checked the front and back locking cams on my Tachihara 45GF camera and note the following:

Re: dirty film / filtering liquids

Check the fixer. If it is slightly cloudy it is "sulfuring out" and precipitating millions of tiny white specks of elemental sulfur. And these specks, being insoluble in water, don't wash off easily.

Re: What is this antique thing?

If that hydrometer floats high in water it is calibrated for a liquid of a lower specific gravity. It could be for ethanol which in its pure form has a SG of 0.79.

    Re: Beautiful Contemporary Daguerreotypes

  16. Re: Nikkor-W 210mm old type 77mm filter ring has 37mm rise on 8x10"

I use a Nikkor-W 210mm lens with the 77mm front on my Tachihara 810HD 8x10 field camera as a mild wide-angle for landscape work. The combo is already set up here so I checked the coverage a couple of...
