Re: Discussion on Tripod Heads for 8x10

Currently, while I practice with the 8x10, I’m using a bogen 3047. It is strong enough for a lighter weight 8x10 but not much more. I’m assembling a setup for a more permanent solution. If I had the...

    Re: Inexpensive 4x5 field cameras

For a folding field/technical camera, I'm guessing that the $300 you're seeing is about as cheap as you're going to get, unless you look for a monorail. Monorails seem to be less popular at the...
  4. Re: Question Regarding 35mm/MF lenses for Macro on 4x5

The image circle of a 35mm camera lens seems like it will be really small. Here is a link of someone doing it with a medium format fisheye:

    Re: Schneider APO-Tele Xenar HM 800 f/12?

another lens to consider are the Nikkor 600/800/1200 tele set. Much cheaper than $14k, even for a complete set. They are tele lenses, so you'll need less bellows (the 800 takes about 530mm at...

    Re: KEH Camera “bargain” lenses

Bargain or better and they will CLA the item if you find obvious flaws (not sure they'd do it for slightly off shutter speeds, but I bought a bargain F2SB that was capping at 1/2000 and 1/1000, and...

    Re: KEH Camera “bargain” lenses

hell, I've bought a number of ugly and as-is lenses, from KEH and have usually been happy. BGN are in my experience are frequently very good. The best I got was an as-is Kodak Ektar 203mm ƒ7.7 for...
  10. Re: How do I recognize lenses that will cover an 8X10 plate with no vignetting

I definitely second this. I have shot 4x5 for ~3 years, and am pretty comfortable with it. I’ve just started in 8x10, and even just that jump is difficult. (It works the same but the larger scale...
  11. Re: How do I recognize lenses that will cover an 8X10 plate with no vignetting

look for the listed image circle to be larger than 325mm. Keep in mind:

    - at 325mm you will have zero room for movements
    - you usually need to be stopped down to ƒ22 to get the listed image...

Re: Fresnel lens for Linhof Technika

On the technika the glass is pinned to a mounting "shelf" and there may or may not be shims between the shelf and the GG. If you put the fresnel behind the GG (between your eyes and the GG), it...

Re: Fresnel lens for Linhof Technika

Correct me if I’m wrong, but as I read that he says that the fresnel optics cause a focus shift due to the focal length of the fresnel lens, and the whole thing should be shimmed back 1/3 the...

    Re: Stearman Press SP-810

Same here--probably 15-20 sheets at this point. Looking at the design, you could probably fit a thin sheet of glass in there, and I'm considering getting one to try it that way, but so far the only...

    Re: Pop-up darkroom...

I wonder if the bigger market for this is people that can’t dedicate a room at home for a darkroom, so want to be able to setup and tear down the darkroom when they’re done?
  19. Re: "Extra" Aperture on Some Shutters (Copal/Schneider Symmar 135mm convertible)

there are more knowlegable people that me on this, but as I understand it, its not the actual opening that matters, but how large the opening looks through the front elements of the lens. The size...

    Re: Notched Film Holders, Examples

as I see it, the primary benefit of the notches is that the location of the film is marked on the negative itself, so you don't have to be especially careful to track the sheet once it comes out of...
  22. Re: "Extra" Aperture on Some Shutters (Copal/Schneider Symmar 135mm convertible)

I think the only way to figure out what you want for certain is to actually measure the opening and see if it amounts to what ƒ5.6 should be on a 135mm (i.e. 24.1mm), then try a couple of other...

    Re: Notched Film Holders, Examples

  28. Re: Use of X-ray film: technical discussion with example images

I get that, but I’m hoping putting rubylith on it will tame it. As is, it works perfectly (5 minute penny test) on Ilford paper, but it burns the film with less that 30 seconds exposure.

    Re: Zone VI tripod questions

I think the 3047 is rated to something like 16lbs (I have no idea if those ratings are standardized), so many 8x10s won't work with it, and even the lightest are starting to push to the max weight...

    Re: Zone VI tripod questions

Cant speak to the tripod, but the 3047 is a Bogen/Manfrotto head that uses the hex shaped QR plate. The standard hex plate costs about $20-25 new for a 1/4, 3/8 or a ones with thumb screw. They...

  35. Re: Question for those who have 8x10 monorails...carrying....

  37. Re: Question for those who have 8x10 monorails...carrying....

I’m still trying to figure that out. While there are big bags, few are big in the right places. I have an old Tamrac bag that came with my Technikardan, and if I pull all the dividers I can barely...
  38. Re: Bought a nice Linhof Master Technika Classic. Can I do the CLA myself to save mon

Yup, I bought lots of stuff, including bellows from them. I had no issues, and the fit of the MT bellows was perfect.
  39. Re: Bought a nice Linhof Master Technika Classic. Can I do the CLA myself to save mon

I replaced the bellows on my MT using the inexpensive $100 eBay bellows from ecbuyonline. They fit well and aren’t too hard to install.

Re: Film on a Plane: Check It or Carry-On?

Yup. Not every airport has them at this point. Checked baggage has been no-go for some time, but carry-on was ok, until they started using CT machines.
