Re: Meniscus lens iris "sweet spot"???

The lens distance balances field curvature and astigmatism, with some effect on coma. Spherical aberration is corrected by the lens shape.

Coma, lateral color and distortion are corrected by...
  2. Re: Any tips on how to repair lenses with Balsam Separation?

It won’t be Canada balsam if made in that timeframe, and you won’t be able to separate with heat (and you’ll crack the lens if you do). Instead You’ll need to separate by soaking in methylene...

    Re: Chamonix Whole Plate Camera!

I’ve shot Whole Plate color... I cut it down with a paper cutter in the dark. Here is a Velvia 100 shot from a couple years ago.

    Re: Chamonix Whole Plate Camera!

    Yes. 6 1/2” x 8 1/2” is the standard size. I cut mine to just under that at 164 x 215 mm
  5. Re: Disasterous Consequences

Someone posted the exact same problem either here or on photrio a few months ago. The cause were the Intrepid lens boards: Thry may look opaque but they are not! They do not block the full...
  6. Re: Dry Mountings vs Hinging and other aspects of presentation

I started off hinging with corner holders, but several of the larger prints hanging on my walls have begun rippling from humidity after just 4-5 yrs. So I’ve gone to dry mount to keep them flat over...
  7. Re: Custom Wet plate holder and Lens Board needed

Chroma makes custom size holders and will fit your camera if you give him dimensions. I wouldn’t worry too much about that.

I’m a big fan of whole plate as well! The Chamonix whole plate film holder is awesome btw.
  9. Re: The story of Yamasaki Optics photographic lens lab

Re: Glass plate, recognise emulsion side

The emulsion side will be slicker than the glass side. The glass side will grab at your fingertips as you slide them across the surface. Also, the emulsion side may have a bit of a texture esp if...
  12. Re: Looking for a count up timer for use with film development

Digital Truth’s Lab Timer app for iphone counts up. You can set it to output red light which, combined with the ability to set a low light filter (Google for how to do this) on the phone makes it...

Here’s a link to a thread on Photrio I started about this topic. You can see what blur diameters I used for the calculations there.

    Re: Goerz Dagor 6” f/6.8

I just acquired a 6” Dagor for my 4x5, probably a few years younger than yours. I haven’t developed the plates I shot with it this weekend, but will post results. The image looked very nice on the...
  15. Re: Focal length, distance, and depth-of-field: clarification?

If you search back through threads I started on Photrio, you’ll find one where I posted exact calculations - no approximation - for specifically these relationships.

    Here it is:...

    Re: Large format Astrophotography

Lol didn’t even see the posts above mine when I posted.

All you’d see are trees. My view to the south is well blocked here in NH.

If you want to see my old work when I lived in Inyokern,...

    Re: Large format Astrophotography

I mounted a Burke & James 24” f/6 aerial reconnaissance lens in a tube so I could mount it to my telescope. I hacked a 4x5 back onto the Back of the tube. Then I shot a pic of Andromeda Galaxy on...

    Re: Jason Lane Dry Plate

    Hi Peter,

Customs and Covid is my guess, but I have no more insight into the workings of the postal system other than obsessively checking 300+ tracking numbers in mid-July so I would know to...

Re: Printing J Lane Dry Plates

They will fit the standard Epson 4x5 holder just like you think they would. :)

You can also contact print or enlarge off them.

I see many folks scan the whole plate including glass edge and...

  23. Re: Metering technique for J Lane Dry Plates

Yeah I use Pocket Light Meter and agree that’s a good way to go. The other thing I’ve been doing lately is meter off a gray card and also learning to meter for shadows. Also been playing with my...
  24. Re: Metering technique for J Lane Dry Plates

Having lived (and metered!) in the desert southwest, I’d try doing a wide field ( i.e. non spot) metering at ASA 2 as a starting point. You will definitely get something.

    If you spot meter on...
  25. Re: ChromaGraphica Double Dry Plate Holder Kickstarter - Friday 9 August 2019 Noon la

    Alan,

Best to use a pencil. If you have blank address labels or adhesive sheets, cut those to shape to replace the tape that cane with them.

    Cheers,

  27. Re: ChromaGraphica Double Dry Plate Holder Kickstarter - Friday 9 August 2019 Noon la

Wipe down the dark slides with Pledge furniture polish. That will smooth things up. Trade secret that I discovered!
  28. Re: ChromaGraphica Double Dry Plate Holder Kickstarter - Friday 9 August 2019 Noon la

A few people have. I’d guess it is stuck in quarantine / customs for whatever prescribed period customs officials have deemed necessary. West coast ports have a much larger throughput so things...
  29. Re: Coverage for Turner-Reich 12/21/28 Convertible Lenses?

  31. Re: How to replace felt/velvet in dark slide light trap Toyo 8x10 holders

  34. Re: Exploring offering of black glass for ambrotypes, silver gelatin ambrotype kits.

I'm going to make it happen. It's a question of figuring out if I can do pre-orders or just buy wholesale.

Yes. After backer holders are delivered, we’ll be preparing to retail them.
  36. Re: Carl Zeiss Perimetar and its huge flat Ziggurat rear glass blocks

Those aren’t blocks. Those are optics!

I’d bet a beer it’s used primarily for correction of lateral color but also fine tuning field curvature / astigmatism.

    As Jim indicates, replicating...

  38. Re: ChromaGraphica Double Dry Plate Holder Kickstarter - Friday 9 August 2019 Noon la

On the test holders I received, the dark slides were tight as well. I found they loosened up with use to a moderately tight feel that I prefer and designed for. In one of the updates I mentioned a...
