Anyone know what the sensor specs are? Is it appropriated from some other piece of equipment? X-Ray machine perhaps? Given the size and resolution could it be a smaller sensor connected with a fiber...
How about a pellicle mirror? You'd give up a stop or so of light, but you wouldn't need to move it.
I've read that a sous-vide cooker is pretty useful for maintaining temperature and circulation. The ~$60 models on Amazon can go up to ~200F with a claimed +/- 0.1C temperature 'accuracy'. You can...
I think this was more of a "go away" bluff than an "I want to eat you" stalk. According to the NYTimes article that accompanied their link to the video the man said that he had just seen 3 or 4 cubs...
A PVS-14 is a light amplification device- it needs no IR, although it's IR sensitive (I suppose a low-powered IR laser at the camera could be used to create an invisible-to-the-naked-eye focus...
A naive question... If you're shooting/copying/scanning with a digital camera then is having a 100% color-accurate source really necessary? Or am I misunderstanding how a lightbox will be used for...
From an interview posted on Petapixel...
You might also test at various apertures. I recently read a paper that claimed that leaf shutters were more 'efficient' at smaller apertures. The reasoning being (I think) that the shutter...
Depending on the phototransistor it may be acting more like a switch than providing an analog signal proportional to light falling on it. For fast shutter speeds the 'plateau' of a fully opened...
Ok... So I'm no pro, but you have a 10 stop ND filter plus 2 stops of red filter = 12 stops.
With no reciprocity taken into account this gives a 60 second exposure.
According to the recip tables...
I was involved in a large format class in Chicago a few years ago. We were set up on a LaSalle St. sidewalk to take pictures of an old 'El' station that was visible across an empty parking lot. A...
I think he probably said "Cerium Oxide" which is a fairly common fine grit polishing compound. Check amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Cerium-Glass-Polish-Mineral-Remover/dp/B004QJN98Q
I believe these are used in low-end photopolymer 3D printing (Stereolithography) with a UV source below, and a tank of polymer above (with platform and lift mechanics). That would imply that it both...
I've been reading the Film to Digital Scanning debate for some time with interest. I ran across this thread on the hackaday site. The author's site (with more detail) is here. The project is using a...
Interesting... Pretty simple. I've used a pipette washer that functions the same way. It's a simple siphon- no valves involved. What confuses me is that the water level actually rises -above- the...
Does he actually need the ground glass? I know almost nothing about the subject, but can't you scan the aerial image?

To measure resistance for shorts, etc. get yourself a cheap DVM (digital volt meter). It'll cost you $10 (or more) and will measure voltage, resistance and current among other things. To check the...
They probably said "DC Rectifier". These would be a couple (or 4, depending on the transformer wiring) of diodes (or a single package of diodes) that rectify the AC from the transformer into DC for...
Thanks to everyone who contributed suggestions! We hit Texas (why Texas?) falls, both Moss Glen falls, Sterling Gorge falls, had lunch at Doc Ponds (4th anniversary party underway), hiked some of the...
I'm going to be in mid-Vermont (the Waterbury/Stowe area) for several days next week and would appreciate any don't/can't miss sights, trails, waterfalls, museums, eateries, etc. suggestions.
I've...

Peter,
Thanks! A great book. I bought it, and it's inspired me to pack my Boggs (high rubber boots)... Apparently a lot of the shots require standing in or near water, salt or fresh.
Thanks Emmanuel!
All great suggestions and information. I'm well prepared (or resigned), both mentally and clothing-wise for the weather. Some protection for the cameras too. Had hoped to see...
I'm off to Iceland at the end of the month for a week of photography. I'll be staying near Vik, on the southern coast. It promises to be an interesting (and wet!) visit and I will probably be seeing...

Arrived in Salt Lake City- the smoke layer below 10,000 feet from (I assume) California wildfires was like that of a cheap pool hall in the early 1960's... Somewhat better in Park...
Hi All,
I'm going to be in the Park City, Utah area (with a car) for the next 4 days or so. Do you have any recommendations for day trips to "don't miss" locations? I'm mostly interested in...
Thank you all so much for the information and advice. I'll be taking my 'tiny' camera- the logistics involved with taking my 4x5 are intimidating... Port Townsend on foot is a possibility, as well as...
I'll be visiting Whidby Island, Washington towards the end of March for a couple of days. I've never been in that particular part of the country before. What are the photographic possibilities in the...
Make sure you use a GFI outlet to minimize chance of 'concerning' events.
Regarding the images you linked to, you're right in that "get-low-and-close-with-a-wide-lens" was used. You can see that the perspective has changed by looking at the relative position of the grasses...
I own a cheap I/R flash trigger that fits on my 35mm camera. It's essentially a (cheap) strobe with a built-in infrared filter that can optically trigger studio strobes without biasing the exposure....
Those are boost supplies rated for 150 watts (optimistically). You put in 12V or more and can get a steady 32 volts out. See here. The lenses are available here. You will need a heat sink for the LED.
I have pretty good luck with the mitten/fingerless gloves that hunters and fly fishermen use. When you don't need the dexterity you can flip the mitten part over your fingertips to keep them...
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition! "Hm! She is made of harder stuff! Cardinal Fang! Fetch...THE COMFY CHAIR!"
Well, -THAT- should give him a taste of the LFPF dynamic!
Ok, the science geek in me has to vent... The dress doesn't weigh any more in the water than it does out of the water (same for Esther Williams' killer bathing suit). Now, getting out of the water...
