At 75, I started 4x5 LF this year and my back is giving out. My heavy medium format kit isn't helping the situation either.
Is it true with old LF lenses (Nikkor, Rodenstock, Fuji, and Schneider) that the sharper more expensive ones are better wide open? But once you start to stop down, they're all about the same?
Some pictures are nicer than others. The Clearing Storm, even if there are more copies of them, that went for over $600K, is a lot nicer than many of the more mundane pictures that went for $20K.
Here's a handy calculator to figure out the various angles of views for different lenses on different formats.

In the US, even if you take possession, you don't pay sales tax if the product is resold.
The distributor just furnishes a "resale certificate" so the sales tax is waived. So for example, if a New...
I'm curious. I've bought Josef Seibel (German) slippers and other shoes through a store in London shipped here to America. I believe the cost was just an additional $15 to cover the shipping over...
My wife I vacationed in the Caribbean Islands. We had the store where we bought something ship it back to our home in NYC because it was too large to carry with us on the plane. I thought nothing...
That's true. If a state has a sales tax on a particular good, they must charge that whether the goods are manufactured within that state or imported from another state or foreign country. That's to...
Curious. Why is there a VAT add on with a private item when importing into the EU now when there wasn't for private items before. Doesn't VAT have to do with original sales and manufacturing?
Isn't that the same as if you bought a used camera privately from me in the US? After all, the UK is like the US or any other non-European country now. They're not in the EU.
Ron, what difference would that make? Weren't the VAT taxes included when they were a member? Aren't the final prices now the same?
1) Why don't 35mm lenses have that falloff? Why are their designs different?
2) If it's a simple formula, why do different people say the falloff varies? There seem to be arguments on this point. ...
Couldn't someone actually measure this by shooting at a white wall? Then measuring the intensity of the scan by sampling different areas of the image to see the falloff in stops?
So what your suggesting is that I use reverse vignetting in Lightroom to lighten the darker edges caused by falloff? Are there any downsides in processing this way? Is there a way to determine an...
Thanks for the advice; pretty much what I'm doing. Waiting.
Yes, I noticed that. But I usually don't vignette my shots deliberately. But since it was there anyway, I decided to use the effect. But you're right. That's why I haven't bought a CF for the...
My wife's idea of a camper is a king-size bed at a Marriot.
Here's what that first one looked like scanned before editing.
Disregard the first Velvia with all the blue skies. I added vignetting when I editted.
Here are three Velvia 50 chromes with the 75mm. There was a little cropping from the sides. What do you think of the vignetting? It should be less with the 90mm....
Oops. I should have read the rest of the posts before responding. It looks like I stepped into a hornet's nest. I don't want to take sides because I don't know enough about this stuff. But let me...
Someone was saying it should be after the CF. I forget the reason. Possible vignetting? Changing the coverage of the CF?
In any case, I still would need larger filters. With my other lenses,...
Drew, My Chamonix has a modified bag bellows. The 90mm is a tight fit inside especially when I close up the bellows. . I haven't shot enough to know if there are vignetting problems. The problem I...
Of course, I have your Nikor 90mm which is a beast.
A Chamonix in 4x5 is $1300 or so, much less than other new cameras.
The MicroOrbix sounds like asymmetrical tilting which I have on the rear standard of my Chamonix 45H-1. Unfortunately, there are no gears. So the tilt adjustment is a little rougher.
Probably his ex-wife.
I just bought a 10x30 binoculars. Not received yet. Could I use it for moon shots? Best way?
Reminds me of those old moon photos from the 1930's.
$7500 to $30,000 are serious awards. Hiring a sheriff or whoever to seize the award money would be worth it. Of course, if they're overseas, not much you can do. In fact, this new court won't...
This is actually a good thing for photographers who can't afford to hire an attorney under the usual existing procedure. Filing this suit shows seriousness and the defendant would have to think...
This is not your local small claims court.
Quote from the linked article:
"Rather than file a federal lawsuit, photographers will be able to bring their infringement claims before a Copyright...
You just didn't see the birds they already ate before you got there. :)
Never mind the panthers. What about the alligators?
Do you guys keep separate expensive meters in each kit? Filters?
I've been using my micro 4/3 digital camera for spot the picture I want to take. I switch it to BW if shooting with BW film and use the zoom to figure out the lens I need. Once all that is down, I...
Do you have to watch where you place added tape? Could that move the holder slightly to knock the focal point out?
Nice tones and composition Mohammad.
