Here's something of interest for comparison - a 75mm Nikkor SW on a 5x7 Canham MQC with the 617 rollfilm back. No center filter, but compensated for (lightly) in Photoshop.

The greater sharpness in the Howtek scan makes a HUGE difference in tonal and object separation. That is the main barrier to getting a great scan from the Epson - sharpness.

This works for me too - I keep it fully assembled when not on a trip, allow it to breathe and hang it from the ceiling in the basement.
One more point about the functionality and why I kept the 5x7 metal Canham camera - I also use the Canham 6x17 rollfilm back which works "best" on the Canham MQC metal camera. Using that rollfilm...
I've had the Canham 5x7 wood and Canham 5x7 metal cameras. The metal camera weighs less than the wood one, by a little bit. I kept the metal one because I liked how it functioned. That's what it...

A 90mm Super Angulon is my normal wide angle for 5x7, but I have used a 75mm Nikkor-SW occasionally with the knowledge I'll have fall-off to compensate for later.

Designing the front standard to use a "common" existing lens board size (e.g. Technika) would be my suggestion. They are common, easily available, and interchangeable with other 4x5 cameras.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned http://www.gigapixel.com/
Have you tried a lens spanner wrench in those two slots and unscrewed the retaining ring to remove the real element?
I had a Rittreck with 5x7 back several years ago. They are built like a tank and pretty indestructible when folded up. The lens board is different from most, so I also had a Technika adapter which...

The biggest problem I've seen is not with adapting to GIMP per se, but in not having well tuned printer drivers or printing profiles for the Epson 3880. I can get a great looking image using GIMP,...
I set it up and hang it from the floor joists in the basement when not being used.
Thanks for the updates - I hope to pop over from NH and see the show soon.
As someone who has this exact "kit" - a Canham 5x7 MQC and Canham 6x17 rollfilm back, my favorite lenses to shoot with the 6x17 back are the 90mm SA, 180mm Fujinon-W, and 270mm G-Claron. On a few...

The easiest way to do this in software (in my opinion) is the post crop vignetting tool in the Photoshop's Camera Raw app. I will note that sometimes its okay leave some light falloff in a wide...
How about a picture of the baffle in the other position?
I like the one with more light on the rock formation in the foreground.
I agree - look for a 5x7 with a 4x5 back. More mass to the camera and a larger lensboard for your special lenses.
I can find 95% of the items on that list on this forum, Craigslist, ebay, or garage sales (and in working condition), and would rather buy known quantities that way.

I would avoid setting the negs directly on the glass if possible. In addition to Mr. Kashi's excellent solution, I made a decent 5x7 neg holder out of two pieces of mat board.
I ran across a lens once that had an internal lens element reversed. You couldn't tell just by looking at the front or back of the lens though. Really difficult to focus...
