Because of the snow storm moving in from the west today, I didn't go very far. I headed south on I-29 to a large country church I haven't photo'd before....

    Wet Plate in Winter

I took Wednesday off and intended to drive west to the Badlands and try some wet plate photos. However, a winter storm was making I-90 an icy mess for several hundred miles. So, I went north...
  3. Re: Should I get a center filter for my 65mm Nikon-SW f/4 & 90mm Sinaron-W f/6.8?

I never use a UV filter and have never had a lens damaged in 40 years. I am an outdoor photographer and photo in all the conditions the Northern Plains can dish out. I do use lens caps routinely.

Yes, it is that tiny! The whole lens/shutter is about 45mm diameter. I think I have found a retaining nut but will keep you in mind in the future.

    Vintage Camera Repair/Restoration

I have a couple of cameras I'm fixing up to use. The first is an Orionwerk Rio Tropen 9x12cm, c.1925. It needs a couple of brass strips made. One holds the plate holder on the back, the other is...

    Re: Tripods in lightning storms?

Doubtful it makes much difference. Air is a good insulator and ligthtning goes through thousands of feet of it.

  8. Re: Disasterous Consequences

WOW! Never would have guessed that but looking at the images that looks correct. The rear bell of the lens was shading the negative.

  9. Re: Disasterous Consequences

It's a good wide angle lens. Note the gap between the rear of the shutter and the lens board. I'm suspecting there is a light leak around the shutter as Jody suggested.

    Re: Jason Lane Dry Plate

It's similar to wet plate, depending on the skill of the person doing it. I store glass negatives with a piece of glassine between them.

The Chamonix is very light. I don't see need for keeping two similar cameras.

    Fixer

I've run out of the B&S fixer I started with. It smells like ammonia so I assume it's ammonia thiosulfate. Can I just use Photographers Formulary PF4 for wet plate fixing? Same dilution?

The duration of the flash is something like 1//500s to 1/1000s so shutter speed only matters if you want ambient light to appear.

Re: Longest Wet Plate Exposure Times

I would assume it was dry plate. Wet plate does indeed dry out as the ether evaporates.

I will add that when I pour on the developer, I'm using a small 100ml beaker. For 4x5 I use about 20 ml, for 8x10 35-40ml. When pouring, I don't use the built in spout but rather the opposite side...
