  3. Re: How different are Tessars from different companies?

It’s possible I got the “design” name wrong. I intended to be talking about Tessar derivatives, like the Gundlach Radar that I enjoy using as much as any other Tessar design lens. :)
  4. Re: How different are Tessars from different companies?

... and I’d suggest that a “reverse Tessar” - Radar - is in the same performance camp as a regular Tessar.

A good book to learn the breadth of exposure metering knowledge is Perfect Exposure by the late Roger Hicks and Frances Schultz. On the used book sites it can easily be found for less than the cost...
  6. Re: "The big two" - Please tell me about your japanese lenses!

Respectfully noted. If one isn’t willing to get vintage gear overhauled and put back in spec the you’re right, life could be difficult. But with a rudimentary understanding of photographic exposure...
  7. Re: "The big two" - Please tell me about your japanese lenses!

True, a bit off topic. But thanks very much for the reply. To get back on topic... as time goes on I’ve been preferring American lenses to either German or Japanese. My favorites are the Commercial...

Have you ever had an opportunity to compare it to a Kodak Commercial Ektar?
  9. Re: "The big two" - Please tell me about your japanese lenses!

    Me too, Jim.
  11. Re: "The big two" - Please tell me about your japanese lenses!

I honestly don’t think my lenses know their ancestry.

Many moons ago I bought into the “German is better” but after using many other lenses I realized that it’s more about subject, composition ,...

Re: Aspect ratio of 10x8 and 5x4?

Yes... that is very confusing. What’s worse is that they put the notch code in the same place no matter which format the film is. I’d think they’d at least be courteous enough to mark portrait and...
