    I take it they get a lot of wind from the left.
    If you see costal trees in Cornwall (UK) the trees have almost no growth on the westward (windward) side and all the growth on the eastern...

    Your right - it is all about the water table in the salt pan.
    The salt is sat on top of an ooze of mud - hence the dreadful smell off the salt.
