    Apparent aperture is the measured size as viewed from the front, whether there's a front element in place or not.

    You might also try a 15" f/5.6 Wollensak Telephoto...remove the rear element, and it becomes an ~180mm f/2.8 SF lens that covers 5x7.

    As an aside, those lenses make dandy soft-focus lenses if you remove the rear element....makes an ~180mm f2.8 SF lens that covers 5x7.
    I have a couple of them dedicated for that.

    Yes, one tiny set screw.
    Careful with the strap wrench, the pivot point on the wrench can make a dent in the lens barrel.

    For contact prints from 5x7, grain isn't much of an issue. Rodinal is economical, easy to mix, the concentrate keeps forever, and it has great 'adjacency effect'. I don't like mushy grain.
