Re: Keeping Time tray developing film

I use a DLG compensating timer (as I no longer have my old Zone VI compensating timer). It has a red LED display, but it's on a shelf where there is no line-of-site between the display and the...

Re: Aspect ratio of 10x8 and 5x4?

Here's a purely neutral response to the OP with no subtle, implied or overt commentary:

An aspect ratio can be expressed in several ways.

As the number of measured units in length to the number...

    Re: Developing film drunk

Sounds more like the 19th hole than the 14th.

Between the camera movements, focus, and whatever development time (and sequence of chemicals) you used, the results will be interesting all the same.

  16. Re: Just acquired a Pentax Spot meter with Zone V Conversion

One of the other things that's interesting about the Gossen Spot-Master is that after metering the dynamic range between the highest and lowest zones, you can push a button to average your readings...

I studied wet plate, platinum/palladium printing, and kalitype contact printing with Lisa years ago at the Center for Alternative Photography (Penumbra Foundation) in NYC. She's an excellent teacher...
  20. Re: Just acquired a Pentax Spot meter with Zone V Conversion

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what any one individual prefers, so long as it works for THEM and produces a good photograph with their intended tonal range. If zone symbols printed on an...
  21. Re: Just acquired a Pentax Spot meter with Zone V Conversion

Thanks Drew. I enjoy learning from your posts, so perhaps that was why I took a bit of umbrage to what I thought was some scoffing at my meter. I've had three different zone-equipped meters and like...

Rob, which do you find to be more opaque, the double fried, or the rotisserie?

Roger, I'm glad you found something. Let us know how well you like it!
  24. Re: Just acquired a Pentax Spot meter with possible Zone VI Conversion

Steve, back to your original post, helpful members have already mentioned the most well-known books that can help you learn the zone system, and I've read them all. However, there's a lesser-known...
  25. Re: Casa Solid Satin Twill Fabric for Dark Cloth

Thanks for the clarification Dan; that's helpful to know.
  26. Re: Just acquired a Pentax Spot meter with Zone V Conversion

Drew, your posts really can be tiresome. You seem to demean others' approaches to photography, while aggrandizing your own. At one point you say, "I do critical film evaluation using lab instruments...
  27. Re: Just acquired a Pentax Spot meter with Zone V Conversion

I formerly owned a Zone VI modified Pentax and found the zone label very useful, but now I use a digital Gossen Spot-Master 2. When I take a reading with the Gossen I can use my thumb to set the...

  30. Re: Casa Solid Satin Twill Fabric for Dark Cloth

Rob, I haven't tested Seattle's blackout cloth (which is why I was careful to say they promote it for photography), so I can't vouch for it. My guess is they meant it was appropriate as a dark cloth,...

  35. Re: Casa Solid Satin Twill Fabric for Dark Cloth

Those are a good width, too. Very economical solution you came up with.
  36. Re: Casa Solid Satin Twill Fabric for Dark Cloth

What a coincidence - I use thermal blackout curtains inside my dark room as added protection around each door, to prevent light from coming in under the door just in case someone comes downstairs and...
  37. Re: Process: a short film about large format photography by Will Campbell

Pieter, it's true the film shows him shooting MF with a roll film adapter on the back of his view camera, but he's also a LF photographer. You might have noticed the larger developing tanks in his...
  38. Re: Casa Solid Satin Twill Fabric for Dark Cloth

Possibly, Sal... we'll see. But I don't want it any heavier or less breathable; I'd like to keep it light for hiking with my pack. I've had a much heavier dark cloth of the same...

  40. Process: a short film about large format photography by Will Campbell

“Process” is a 3-minute short film by Will Campbell that takes a quick look into the mind and motivations of a large format photographer. Given its short length, it doesn't go into any great depth...
