    Re: Why not a rangefinder?

I started view camera photography with a medium format (6x9cm) Horseman technical rangefinder camera. I choose Horseman over Linhof due to price and availability. When I got mine, it was easy to get...
  2. Re: Almost forgot how to do front fall...

Good point. Yes, the front rise will work to tailor the amount of drop when the bed is dropped. However, dropping the bed tips the lens forward. If one wants to keep the lens and film parallel (like...
  3. Re: Almost forgot how to do front fall...Horseman FA 4x5

The Horseman FA is very compact and light, but is a little 'minimalist' when it comes to the complete movement set. With the lens pulled out on the rails, there is NO drop available, only rise.

  4. Almost forgot how to do front fall...Horseman FA 4x5

I needed some front fall and had not done it with this camera in quite a while. My first shot was with the bed dropped, but the bed drop on only stops in one position and is not variable. Then I saw...
  5. Re: Rise/fall and shift mechanisms on Horseman L45 basic model

No mention or picture of anything like that in any of the Horseman catalogs or user's manuals I have.

Re: Question about JOBO expert drums

I fold a paper towel over the sponge and dry the cylinders that way. Keeps the sponge clean too, because all the black residue goes on the paper towel.
  7. Re: Choosing a film camera for the future... (35mm vs 4x5!)

Not both?? They shouldn't be that expensive.
You probably need both if you are just starting out. Beginner mistakes on 4x5 will be costly.

Fantastic answer. That really clears things up for me. This has the makings of a great sub forum.

Now for a very stupid question. What is encompassed in the "Wet Plate" nomenclature of this sub-forum.

The reason I ask, is that as a photography minor, I was always intrigued by statements that...

I have only done wet plate once. But it is nice to see a sub-forum where I can come in case I want to do it again.
  14. Re: Durst L1840 Enlarger 8x10 10x10--Everything you wanted to know...

Oh, I see. You have replaced only the lamp with the LED panel. The condensers are still in place. Nice solution.

Tin can had done some experiments with LED panels too, but from what I recall he...
  15. Re: Durst L1840 Enlarger 8x10 10x10--Everything you wanted to know...

I'm not that familiar with the condenser head. Can you post a picture of the light panel and how it is installed?
  16. Re: Durst L1840 Enlarger 8x10 10x10--Everything you wanted to know...

My ceiling cuts off about 2 inches of maximum height. The thing about 8x10 enlarging is with the relative small magnification ratios, that 2 inches is the difference between a 30" and a 40" print...
  17. Re: Durst L1840 Enlarger 8x10 10x10--Everything you wanted to know...

Again, I don't have that gear in my enlarger, but I still don't see why it can't be 3D printed. This guy 3D printed a gear for a friggin lettuce washer.

Yes that would be correct to have the two convex surfaces toward each other.
  19. Re: Seeking Ideas For Replacing Film Holder Labels?

It has been over ten years since I got my stash of 4x5 holders. I believe I used Acetone to clean the label area. Be careful Acetone will melt the black plastic. I actually used the Acetone to smooth...
  20. Re: Durst L1840 Enlarger 8x10 10x10--Everything you wanted to know...

Every time bulbs for that head are discussed I always post the same thing. Consider using an diffusion disk as the target for the condensers (rather than the globe of the hard-to-find lamp) and...
  21. Re: Durst L1840 Enlarger 8x10 10x10--Everything you wanted to know...

Condenser focal length and lens focal length need to be coordinated via the chart in the manual to ensure even distribution of light. The way I think of it is the condensers are focusing the light at...

What head/bulb do you have? There were 5 different Durst heads and many other brands fit too.

For ten years in this thread I always recommend the L184 if one is not an electrical hobbyist (like myself), because 'mechanical items are easier to fix.' So maybe this is not the case for you guys...

Contact it to the paper tightly so no light leaks around. If light leaks around the dense strips this will mess up readings. If you just want to measure contrast, expose so the entire scale fits in...
