    Re: Cold Temp Paper Washing

Hah! You know there was a semi recent episode of the lenswork podcast where the host argued that photographs largely spend too much time worrying about archival extension of print life. As if every...
  2. Re: Scanning one's collection of negatives and slides.

Looking forward to seeing what your tests come back with. Camera scanning can be a bit of a rabbit hole. I'm not sure if you follow the other thread on the subject but I use a Panasonic S1R and a...

    Cold Temp Paper Washing

I will be using a Versalab 11x14 print washer. My darkroom water heater is only 6 gallon, and currently the water is coming out in the low 50s here in Maine. I have a thermostatic mixer so I can...
  4. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

By the way Negative Lab Pro 2.1 is out. There are some expanded features here that are going to be very useful. Included are a great many ways to add metadata to your film scans. It looks like...
  5. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

I just found the "Ignore List" feature on this site. I recommend you all take advantage of it. Trolls should not be allowed to post on this forum.

If this 'effective pixel' nonsense were true...
  6. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Go enjoy your Epson dude. I don't care about your FUD barking.
  7. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Well I haven't done any testing in this area but I suspect a 20mp m4/3 scan right next to a 20mp 24x36 scan would show very little difference in a small print size or on screen. On the other hand,...

    Re: E6/Positive LF film?

4x5 E100 is coming soon. It'll be in 10 sheet boxes some time next year I think. E100 is IMO better than E100G, and much better than Provia. I have an unopened box of Provia in 8x10 that I'm...
  9. A Little Bird Told Me... (Kodak news)

That E100 will be available in 4x5 along with the 120 rolls coming. I was also told no 8x10 for now. Hopefully that will follow soon, but still good news. This is part of the info packet sent out...
  10. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

There are advantages and disadvantages. For one your macros are going to be shorter, so more DoF, that's a plus. You are shooting at base ISO, so even Micro 4/3rd cameras will create a nice clean...
  11. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

That's fantastic man! Your rig looks great. Yeah there are just a lot of people spreading FUD regarding camera scanning. I was a doubter myself for a while. The proof of the pudding is in the...
  12. Re: Macro Lens For Panasonic DC-S1R For Large Format Film Scanning?

40x50 would be a very insignificant upres in PS. Personally i'd still do that in a single capture. 60, not sure. I'd at least test the upres. OTOH if you have the time testing 2-3 capture...
  13. Re: Macro Lens For Panasonic DC-S1R For Large Format Film Scanning?

I'm scanning nearly all formats from 35mm to 8x10. The 70 is great for this because it allows single capture of all these formats on a copy stand.

    Here is a jpg of a 4x5 I scanned for a client....
  14. Re: Macro Lens For Panasonic DC-S1R For Large Format Film Scanning?

I use a custom made 10x12 platform that holds a piece of ANR glass about 4" above my Kaiser Slimlight Plano. I personally have not bothered to wet mount but yes, if I were to I would use optical...
  15. Re: Macro Lens For Panasonic DC-S1R For Large Format Film Scanning?

I believe there have been some firmware updates to improve focusing with the adapter, but... I have never once bothered to manually focus when scanning with this lens. The contrast detect AF works...

  17. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Here is a great recent example of Portra 160 scanned with the S1R in pixel shift. I processed this with Negative Lab Pro. I did NOT do any dusting yet however, so you'll see some of that.

  18. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Based on that argument you are saying that contact prints from 8x10s have no value? Also you’re the one that said it was so easy so how many megapixels am I resolving based on the chart you told me...

  20. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Even at 155mp with nothing to flatten the Portra 160 4x5 I scanned today I had no flatness issues. If the film was obviously curling I'd simply tape or weigh down the edges. Every case is slightly...

    Re: Diagnosing a Light Leak

I tried the trick with the flashlight and I can't see any leak no matter how I pull my darkslide out. I'm going to order some RC paper and do some tests next week. It's pretty baffling frankly. ...

  25. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

You may not. If you're putting the film emulsion side to the glass then 'in theory' it should not produce newton rings. It also doesn't degrade the scan so I just use ANR glass to be on the safe...

    Diagnosing a Light Leak

I'm trying to diagnose light leaks. Do these look like they are camera back related or film carrier related? These leaks are almost always in this basic spot.

    Thanks!

    1. Not that I know of, just whatever works to blur any surface scratches on the panel.

    2. I use the Negative Supply Mark I for 35mm, Bessler carriers for 120, and a custom made 10x12 anti newton...
  30. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

I thought it might be easier to show and not tell. Apologies for the noisy iPhone pic. This is my set up for scanning sheet film. The window behind has a blind that comes down to mask all light by...
  31. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

I would say that you are right on with everything save the film holder set up. I would avoid the Better Scanning kit, as I have it and it doesn't really sit flat on a light table. The anti newton...
  32. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Yeah it's just based on Fuji Image Intelligence, and it actually has a Noritsu profile as well. There is a lot of flexibility, it doesn't clip like the Frontier will. I hear you though, custom LUTs...
  33. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Frankly I would continue to use your 90mm Sony lens. It's supposedly great. It might be over long if you're scanning larger formats though, perfectly fine for 35-4x5.

    The copy stand is easy,...

  35. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

I've tested it and with a DSLR there is very little need. It does reduce dust and scratch prevalence a bit, but you don't get that general increase in quality that you sometimes see with other...
  36. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

  37. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Of course! The K-1 II is an excellent but ultimately flawed camera. It's AF system is just unforgivable really, though that doesn't effect scanning much. It's great for 35mm where you can get true...
  38. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Blah blah blah blah blah I've heard it all before about effective pixels. There is always some 'well actually' guy online who has some napkin math to tell you what's wrong with your scanning rig. ...
  39. Re: Should I Drum Scan, X1 Flextight Scan, or use the Epson V850 w/Aztek Wet Mount Ki

Camera scan. My Panasonic S1R makes a 155mp image from 4x5 sheets in seconds. The quality is incredible, and you'll be done in a few hours as opposed to days. Camera scanning makes the X1 obsolete...
