Re: Epson 4990 vs Nikon D850?

Don't forget to post them here.
  2. Re: Assessing film speed and development time without a darkroom.

Drew, I'm not as confident in my ability as you are in yours to get the exposure right the first time. I also don't hike miles but rather a few hundred yards from my car at the most. I even have a...

Re: Harrison Jumbo Film Changing Tent - Sticky

I follow the instructions. I fold it loosely inside an open carton. I don't keep it in the sack bag. I think that's just for traveling.
  4. Re: Assessing film speed and development time without a darkroom.

Well, as I said in an earlier post, I always bracketed with roll film. I'ts just so easy and convenient and cheap. I agree now that I started 4x5 2 1/2 years ago that I don't bracket except in...
  5. Re: Assessing film speed and development time without a darkroom.

Not everyone shoots as much as you do. So if bracketing allows less experienced photographers to capture the right exposure under especially difficult lighting conditions, and go home bagging the...
  6. Re: Assessing film speed and development time without a darkroom.

Bernice. That's great for work in a studio with controlled light or at a photo shoot in midday light where you have loads of equipment and helpers. But for the average, non-pro (even pro)...
  7. Re: Scanner Comparison 2019 [Epson Flatbed | Eversmart Flatbed | Drum Scanners]

Any method probably will be fine. I do scan 4x5, 6x7 and 35mm with a V850 at 2400bpi. (I'm shooting 4x5 with a 45H-1 Chamonix) But that gets reduced for the web at the end of editing to around 1600...
  8. Re: Assessing film speed and development time without a darkroom.

Weeks often months can go by before I shoot a shot. If it's not what I want or think it's anything special, I won't bother. So when I finally feel it's worth taking the camera out and setting it up...
  9. Re: Scanner Comparison 2019 [Epson Flatbed | Eversmart Flatbed | Drum Scanners]

What will you do with the scans?
  10. Re: Assessing film speed and development time without a darkroom.

I bracket medium format 6x7 roll film but don't bracket (usually) since starting 4x5. It's pretty cheap and convenient with roll film. I will bracket an extra shot in 4x5 if I'm shooting in...
  11. Re: Assessing film speed and development time without a darkroom.

How do you use the densitometer on a scanner and what does it mean? I have an Epson V850 scanner and a lab develops my film. I shoot Tmax for BW and various chromes for color.

Re: Treatment of Ektachrome E100 ?

Only the settings would be different. If your setting at mountain elevation was let's say 1/125 at f/16, the less bright lighting at sea level might cause the Nikon to set it at 1/125 at f/11. But...

Re: Treatment of Ektachrome E100 ?

Your processes, Drew, are traditional analog. You don't scan. He does. So he's using a different tool set that you have no or little experience with. But his methods give him what he needs when...

Re: Treatment of Ektachrome E100 ?

But Alex Burke's shots look terrific. He's backed up his comments with his pictures. Why would he say ASA 80 or 64 if his pictures came out differently? Maybe you and he process film differently?...

Re: Treatment of Ektachrome E100 ?

Wouldn't the higher altitude this was shot at mean that the box speed at lower altitudes is less than 100. Alex Burke in the link provided by Patrick seems to think it's actually 80 or 64. Burke...

    Nice. What was your setup?
  17. Re: Wow, I just saw a price of my (budget film that I get), and is now $50 more!!

What I found interesting where I live in NJ is that while the Federal tax requires 7 1/2% of income before you can take medical and dental deductions, in NJ it starts after 2 1/2%.
  18. Re: Wow, I just saw a price of my (budget film that I get), and is now $50 more!!

Also, check state vs Federal as the rules are often different.
  19. Re: Wow, I just saw a price of my (budget film that I get), and is now $50 more!!

Have you checked with a tax advisor to see if any of that is deductible as a medical expense?
  20. Re: Wow, I just saw a price of my (budget film that I get), and is now $50 more!!

Two boxes of 20- Velvia 50 4x5 just arrived expiring in late 2023. Into the freezer either to use later or keep as an investment for resale. :)

    Re: Film scanner, buying refurbished?

My credit card extends warranties one year. So a one-year manufacturer's warranty is effectively two years. It's part of their coverage when I use their card to purchase the equipment. Not every...

    Re: Velvia 50 replacement

I appreciate your positive views. Those are mine pretty much as well. I like film for the contemplative process. But I don't have a darkroom. So using digital is required to get results I can see...
  23. Re: "If I wanted to be safe, I would have done Landscapes."

Calculators and cash machines also rob people of thinking. Many young people just can't do simple arithmetic without them. Cashiers can't give you the right change from a ten dollar bill without...

    Re: Lens coating test

Well I haven't noticed any bad results. But maybe I have to try it on a blank wall or maybe a black wall or whatever to bring out the defects. Is there a procedure to do that?
  25. Re: "If I wanted to be safe, I would have done Landscapes."

Photography in a way does remove our ability to memorize or remember experiences.

It's like my GPS navigation system. When I use it, I can't remember how to re navigate without it. I rely on it...

Re: Where do y'all record your photo data ?

I use my micro 4/3 zoom camera for that. 4:3 (20:15) is very close to 5:4 (20:16). Plus I know where the zoom on it represents the different LF lenses I use. SO when I zoom I predetermined the lens...

I suppose I wasn't clear. The ordinary and unheroic edits of the scanned image bring back Velvia colors in general. The same with Ektachrome and Provia. They also adjust to their designed...

Re: Where do y'all record your photo data ?

Vaugh, you make a good testimonial for the brand. You ought to let them know about the books you kept with your notes. Maybe they'll make you a deal to advertise for them.
